ISFnet Inc. (株式会社アイエスエフネット, Kabushiki-gaisha ISFnet) (pronounced I-S-F-net; I for Information Systems, S for Strategic Alliance and F for Financial Technology) is a Japanese multinational corporation headquartered in Akasaka, Tokyo. The company is an integrated IT services provider based in Tokyo, with 23 branch offices across Japan and subsidiaries in China, Korea and Singapore.

History[edit]

Established in Yanagibashi, Taito, Tokyo, Japan in January 2000 by four people including current president, Yukiyoshi Watanabe (渡邉 幸義). Registered capital was around USD $100,000 but increased 5 months later in July to USD $300,000. Current capital which increased in July 2003 now stands USD $1.7 million. Around the same time, the head office was relocated to Akasaka in Tokyo. During the years of 2001 to 2005, branch offices were established in 12 areas in Japan. ISFnet Korea (January) and China (September) were established in the following year (2006) including a few service stations.

Philosophy and Policy[edit]

ISFnet’s business model is driven through nurturing of relationships, promotion of good health, commitment to objectives and support for growth. This view takes a reflective thinking approach where ethics, humanity, society and environment are given emphasis rather than measuring success through just profit and numbers. ISFnet activities revolve around its 10 core philosophies which in turn surrounds four key interrelated areas of humanity, information, knowledge and wealth.

Controversy[edit]

Despite ISFnet's claims of promoting good health and prioritizing the welfare of their employees, ISFnet has faced scrutiny for treating employees in a manner unbecoming of its philosophies. Many middle managers have been known to belittle underlings or shout at them publicly. The company has a very high turnover rate as a result and many employees leave the company within less than a year. Employees who do not submit weekly reports (where they have to watch videos of the company's president and read his blog and submit comments) on the exact day that they're due will get a notice from the company's HR department that they've committed a "business manner violation" (ビジネスマナー違反). In such a case, dispatched employees will have to visit the head office at their expense to apologize or undergo more training, which often consists of an employee being badgered or yelled at by a middle manager. On the Japanese blog site 2channel, where a thread maxes out at 1,000 comments, there are over 20 full threads of employees leaving critical remarks about their experiences at ISFnet. In short, ISFnet is gaining a reputation for not living up to its own ideals.

Core Business[edit]

ISFnet's IT solutions have grown to include:

  • Application Development - offers custom dynamic enterprise level software development with emphasis on structure and security.
  • Education - ISFnet is a Microsoft Gold Certified Partner[2]. Among others, ISFnet conducts training for CCNA and LPIC certifications.

Environmental concerns[edit]

The company is involved in the reduction of waste caused by the disposal of computer hardware, by recycling and re-using this hardware, and providing these computers at a low cost. The aim is so that more people can take advantage of IT while reducing the strain on the environment. Most ISFnet employees are provided the same recycled laptop supplied to their customers.

Employees with disabilities[edit]

ISFnet Harmony Ltd is a 100% ISFnet subsidiary providing a working environment and opportunity for people with disabilities to work in the IT industry. On March 27, 2008, the Shinagawa Public Employment Exchange presented ISFnet Harmony the Special Subsidiary Authorization (As determined by the Japanese Disability Employment Encouragement Law) for providing stable working opportunities to disabled people[3].
