This user is spamming a non-notable book, Dracula's Return all over wikipedia. The article on the author, David Logan, was maintained for a long while by sockpuppets, but for some unknown reason, not deleted. Is this spam?

Although on the face of it this looks like spamming behaviour, the links do appear to at least broadly relate to the article subject, though that relationship is sometimes tenuous. Is this acceptable linking, a good-faith but possibly misguided attempt to help out, or a calculated attempt to get in under our radar? EyeSerenetalk 12:20, 5 August 2009 (UTC)

I can only assure you that this is a good faith effort to provide external links to collections that are useful to people finding information about the topic! There was one case where I admit the linkage was tenuous, and I was promptly contacted and took the advice of the editor. I apologize if some of my other links are not considered valid, as well. I try to provide links to digital collections under pages where users will find the information useful. The collections are carefully curated and are not commercial. I don't care about Google ratings. But if there is a primary resource of documents, images, or text that directly relates to a page in Wikipedia, I believe that it is a valid resource. I will be happy to provide more information on the collections, if it would be useful. I appreciate your concern, and I really want to make a case that I am spamming! However, our collections span a number of topics so I place them on a variety of pages. Thanks for the report. Two more people adding the link:
Obviously, from the WP:SPA behavior, it is spam. However, I started to wonder (looking at a couple of examples) whether it had some merit. However, the following convinced me that it really is spam: These two edits added a reference (but it is not verifying any text in the article) and the added link goes to a page which has 18 words on the subject, then "There are currently no objects by Carlo di Carlo for sale at Deconet". Second opinion on single-purpose "reference" spam account

While Blycroft (talk · contribs · count) has been adding reasonable content to articles, it appears that the motivation is to link to a single "African?Middle East telecom news site." Username is same as publisher name of newssite [12].

Seeking second opinions as to whether wholesale reverts of material is warranted, or if the site qualify as a reliable source. OhNoitsJamie Talk 15:51, 14 August 2009 (UTC)

I'd say this is problematic. The site's link never resided on wikipedia before the mass citation spamming of Blycroft1. Earlier contributions of the user are of soley reference spamming the link;
Both links soley have this single WP:SPA account adding them to wikipedia 2. Spam in this case is defined not so much by the content of the sites being added, as by the behavior of the individual adding them. ametw.com was created 2009-03-06 according to domaintools and the regisrar is private. Its too new of a site to be added at that intensity. Smacks of marketing. telecomsmarketresearch.com however is a bit older, and based on the data, the Registrant aparrently has many more domains, which have probably been added similarly, under another acount. Neutral and independent Wikipedia editors should get to decide whether to add it, Not the SPA. I'd revert while they are fresh.--Hu12 (talk) 17:36, 14 August 2009 (UTC)
OhNoitsJamie reverted most. I reverted the remainder except for one ref in List of mobile network operators of the Middle East and Africa which seemed desirable, and several in Zain which need to be fixed (too complex for me atm). Some of the good content added by Blycroft was a copyvio of the ref (which includes "Source: Blycroft Ltd, Copyright 2006 Blycroft Ltd" at the bottom). I thought much of the information was also too similar in style to the news page of a business paper (nothing wrong with that in news media, but rather non-encyclopedic). A tonne of IPs have, this evening, been adding the following text to (seemingly) random articles:

Spammers

There are probably loads more - every time I look, I find a bunch more.

I don't use AWB or anything similar, so I'm having a hard time trawling through all the contributions for these IPs and reverting; could someone with more know-how do it automagically? Also note: some articles to which this message has been added have more than one IP attempting to add the message, sometimes without anyone having reverted the first one. In this way I keep finding more IPs who are adding this message.

This has been going on periodically for a couple of years. See the log for abuse filter #7.[13] There were over 700 edits in just a few hours the other day. These are all open proxies, mostly dynamic, to be blocked on sight for a year or so. You may be able to find more of the spam through WP:OPD and the search engine. In general they clean up pretty well. There are several admins on it right now, but more help is always good. -- zzuuzz (talk) 19:59, 14 August 2009 (UTC)

Both versions have been used, anom is the most recent attempt to subvert the blacklisting. Anon... has not been removed since it was added to the blacklist, and will most certainly remain indeffinatly. --Hu12 (talk) 14:01, 17 August 2009 (UTC)

This wouldn't be quite as outrageous if both the internal spam link to Pink Sheets and the inline link to pinksheets.com weren't always added in the first line of the lead. Think findagrave.com, except always on the top line instead of semi-hidden in the external links. Circuit City is one example. Cross wiki spamming
Long term abuse and self promotion. Persistent spamming despite multiple/multi-year warnings. Abusing multiple accounts, persistant harassment, both on Wikipedia and through use of the email system. Additionaly used convexoptimization.com as an attack site for the harrassment of Wikipedians and sponsored efforts to impugn the real world identities of Wikipedia contributors[25][26][27][28][29]. Additionaly, the accounts were created and exist for the sole or primary purpose of promoting Jon Dattorro and the related websites in apparent violation of Conflict of interest or anti-spam guidelines. The only contributions from the user are to add links to different videos in 15 articles, and that was in a 24 hour period. I looked at a tiny part of two videos, and they are what they claim, namely various people speaking about why we should all be nice. There are 3 other articles (before this user) which had links to the same site. The user is mentioned (probably improperly) at ANI, where someone commented that 4 of the links looked ok.
