Portal:Furry fandom[edit]

Portal:Furry fandom (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs)
(convenience link: subject article Furry fandom)

Delete Multi-page portal on a subculture subject area that does not meet the breadth requirements of the WP:POG guideline. UnitedStatesian (talk) 13:29, 22 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

  • Delete I almost nominated this myself yesterday because you have to really stretch the topic hard to get the minimum of 20 pages in the topic. For example I don't consider talking animal charactors in kids books to have anything substantial to do adults in furry suits at a convention. Legacypac (talk) 15:18, 22 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
First off: for the record, it's not just adults in those furry suits - American conventions increasingly admit children in large numbers, although this is less common in other countries. That aside: furries are not just fursuiters. They are fans of the concept of anthropomorphic animal characters - animals that are "people", with attributes normally considered unique to humans, including but not usually limited to intelligence. Running around in a fursuit is one way to express that interest, just as running around dressed up as Naturo is one way to be an anime or manga fan; but as the currently-selected articles show, so is reading and writing comics (Ozy and Millie) and graphic stories (Albedo), reviewing stories and non-fictional literature (Fred Patten), creating and commissioning character art, creating and playing roleplaying games focused around such characters (Furcadia). It's similar to science fiction fandom and fantasy fandoms, from which it is an offshoot combined with funny animal artists who wanted to tell more serious stories than those in "kids books". Furries consider all these things to be "furry", and that is why there are over 150 regular furry-specific events around the world with programming that draws these interests together. If you feel some of these topics are tangential, it may be because media coverage of furries tends to focus on fursuits as the most visible, entertaining element - even though ConFurence existed for a decade prior to their becoming anything significant within the fandom. There are legitimate debates over whether works pre-dating the fandom but appreciated by it can be considered "furry" (probably not, for this purpose), but notable works such as T.H.E. Fox exist and are entirely within the remit of "furry fandom". GreenReaper (talk) 00:40, 23 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

  • Comment: I'm in an awkward position, being both the initial creator of this portal and of one of the main reasons it's inactive, WikiFur. I disagree with the deletion premise as stated, but it's clear that the problems highlighted in the prior deletion discussion have not been addressed. {{Furry fandom}} and List of furry comics only scratches the surface (for example, WikiFur:Category:Comics has 800 entries); but Wikipedia has historically deleted articles on the most of the topics furries are interested in; so most of us took our editing elsewhere. Nowadays I have my hands full helping to maintaining WikiFur's own coverage due to topic proliferation resulting from furry fandom's growth. Summarizing WikiFur might be one solution (or bringing in some of our existing summaries of featured articles and selected comics), but I doubt that'd be viewed favourably; and it's hard to muster enthusiasm in maintaining a satellite portal here which could never reasonably cover most of the topics. There are other editors who have contributed to furry topics here more recently, such as JalenFolf, Mwalimu59 and Equivamp, and perhaps they might take in on, but to what end I'm not sure. • Comment. Niche, and like all portals, a 100% wasted effort since no reader ever visits them, but what's the harm? --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 01:45, 24 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete - Old portal, 80 subpages, created 2008-08-31 01:13:57 by User:GreenReaper. A comment by a maintainer has made the day. Two items of each kind, in eleven years. The pages Portal:Furry fandom/Selected convention/nnn are a fake: only 4 of them are non empty, and the 4th says: the longest-running as of 2006. Where is the alleged navigation tool ? Portal:Furry fandom. Pldx1 (talk) 15:58, 24 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete: content is easily covered via Portal:Culture as a subculture. Jalen D. Folf (talk) 16:16, 24 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
