  • I'm not going to get to finish this, but my "backwards copyvio" radar is triggered. Need to confirm. Note that the book claims a publication date of 1967, but it is published by Lulu.com, a print-on-demand publisher launched in 2002 with a history of Wikipedia infringement. • Okay, a few more minutes. This edit on 6 March 2011 introduced the sentence "The inclusion of the title "ser" indicated that Leonardo's father was a gentleman." The bit about "his full birth name was "Lionardo di ser Piero da Vinci", meaning "Leonardo, (son) of (Mes)ser Piero from Vinci" was already in the article. Looking to see when that was added, I find this edit by another user in 2009, who was added parentheses to the word son. The text is even older, as I find it present in the article as May 2006.

In April 2007, there was a significant infusion of text on suggestion from the talk page here, which included the following text: " He was the illegitimate son of Ser Piero da Vinci, a Florentine notary, and Caterina, a peasant." The external source has text very like this. It reads, "He was the out-of-wedlock son of the wealthy Messer Piero Fruosino di Antonio da Vinci, a Florentine notary, and Caterina, a peasant." We can trace the evolution of that sentence over time in our article. In this edit in October 2007, Ser Piero became Messer Piero and expanded his name. In April 2010, he earned the nickname "the wealthy." And in June 2011, "illegitimate" became "out of wedlock."

Given that the 1967 date of the source is patently wrong and the clear evidence of evolution of this content in our article by multiple editors over the course of many years, I believe we must conclude that this is a backwards copy unless more evidence is produced otherwise. --Moonriddengirl (talk) 02:29, 3 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your detective work. It seems you forgot to put the explanation on the talk page. --Espoo (talk) 10:24, 20 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
