IndyCar results classifications[edit]

Hi there, I've noticed a bunch of relatively recent edits you've made in IndyCar-related articles, where you're changing around what is classified as entering, not starting, withdrawing etc.; and I think there are definitely a few instances where you are deviating from what might be considered a norm - especially where your edits conflict with official series published results. A few examples being:

  • 2021 GMR GP — Carlin and Chilton were still officially entered for the race, and were listed on the results sheet for Practice 1, albeit with no laps and no time set (same as Palou). All other official results do not include them. As they were officially entered into a session, but did not take part in the race – and crucially, were not awarded any points – that should count as a withdrawal, no?
  • 2014 Pocono — Jack Hawk was officially listed in the race results as a Did Not Start.
  • 2012 Texas — Rubens and Simona were officially listed in the results as a Did Not Start, as they did not get away from the dummy grid onto the pace laps.
  • 2009 — Power, Philippe, and Barrett were all officially listed as Did Not Start in their respective races.

Think it might at the very least warrant discussion? 🇮🇪 TheChrisD {💬|✏️} 04:27, 6 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Chris, thanks for getting in touch. I can see the merit and valid reasoning on what you said. Even though some of those official results are contradictory to the actual facts and non consistent with similar instances in the same seasons, they are indeed official and should stand over anything else. Having said that, the DNS situation is a bit hairy, because while a Did Not Start is given in those cases as the reason a driver retired from a race, those drivers also have a numerical position on the race, and are awarded points according to those positions. There's also not a consistent pattern on whether pulling out of the dummy grid or not makes a difference for a DNS; Jack Hawksworth also failed to get away from the dummy grid at Detroit 2016, yet he's listed as a mechanical retirement.
I agree we should abide to official results wherever possible, but a clarification on the DNS/final position duality is also needed. It is very important because a non-start can be considered an official start by the series if the driver is listed in the final classification, while a DNS usually implies that the race do not count towards the driver's total. MasterAlSpain (talk) 13:16, 6 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
As long as you don't pull out of the weekend early, or fail to qualify for the race at all, every race counts in terms of points - at least since they started giving the entire field race points. Hence why they still get a race order in terms of the half points awarded.
For Jack, I can't quite remember the coverage of that race to understand the difference. With Rubens/Simona they didn't fire at all due to the fuel pump issues; maybe Jack fired up but couldn't pull away? Part of it is probably down to the ambiguity of the rule in question (currently 12.3.5.)

If a Car participates in practice and/or Qualifications, but is unable to start a Race, the Driver and/or the Entrant shall receive half of the points the Car would have received for the Race had the Car started the Race (“non-starting Cars”). INDYCAR shall determine whether a Car is deemed to have participated for purposes of this Rule.
