Citations

Hi Ian,

I am starting the "evaluation" assignment for my animal behaviour class, and I wondered if I need to add citations under the section titled "Why have you chosen this article to evaluate?" I ask this because I slightly described the article and mentioned an example of the behaviour outlined in the article. This assignment will not be published as a Wikipedia article, so I wasn't sure if I needed to cite it or not!

WCI Peer Review

Your article appears to be well-structured and follows the style of Wikipedia. The only criticism I can think to give you is that some parts feel repetitive, i.e. "evaluating words like the German words." I also think you should add the examples contrasting the differences between denotation and connotation from the current published article as well as add the difference between denotation and reference or meaning. Help with image copyright

Hello Ian! I'm doing an article on Calvin Ashford, Jr. and there aren't too many available sources regarding him, but I was able to find some photo footage from two different sources. However, one is a website and the other is a digital copy of a magazine issue. When uploading these photos, I used the upload file link to do so (after screen grabbing the images) but I am unsure of the copyright issues. Wikipedia told me "This file does not have information on its copyright and licensing status. Unless the copyright and licensing status is provided, the file will be deleted after Wednesday, 6 October 2021. Please remove this template if a correct copyright license tag has been added."

How should I go about solving this??

Hi Jpark111. Unless you have evidence that the image has been released under a free license or that the copyright has expired, you can't use it. Odds are an image from the 1970s is still subject to copyright. Ian (Wiki Ed) (talk) 18:01, 29 September 2021 (UTC)

University of Minnesota/Fiction and the Future

If they're as close as St. Paul, I do hope you're urging the students and the instructor to come to WisCon in May of 2022. There is no better place on the planet to study the topics of gender, sexual identity, etc. in SF than a WisCon. I'm just a civil service clerk, but WisCon is where I got to talk to Ursula LeGuin and Octavia Butler, to say nothing of Samuel R. Delany and Nisi Shawl. Abandoned user drafts

Hi Ian, perhaps you already do this these days... Anyway, please would you encourage students to incorporate their work, if it's good, into the live articles? While doing category maintenance I stumbled across User:Alinarez/sandbox/Madonna of the Pomegranate, a substantial rewrite which looks worth using, but will become harder to merge as further edits are made to the live article. – Fayenatic London 08:25, 6 October 2021 (UTC)

Every day I review CSD G13 stale drafts and there are always a few from student editors. They receive a notice at 5 months on their talk page that their draft might be deleted at 6 months but most of them do not become regular editors after class is over and don't see the notice. If they don't move their articles into main space or add the content to a main space article during the course term, it's likely not to happen at all. Most of the time, the drafts are not in "main space ready" shape but it's clear that some editors have put a lot of work into their class projects and it's unfortunate that the bulk of it is just deleted, six months later. @Fayenatic london and Liz: It's always a shame when good student contributions never get moved to mainspace. (I find the trend these days to move things that are less than perfect to draft space to be a bit annoying sometimes, when it's almost good enough). I try to get to these, but I honestly rarely find the time. That said, abandoned student work is sandboxes should be fair game for people to merge into mainspace - only a very small proportion of student editors continue to edit after the class is done. I occasionally merge them myself, marking the edit as WP:AGF. If I don't have time for that then I tag the draft for merging and leave a message on the article talk page inviting an interested editor to do the merge.
I this case it turns out that I was mistaken – the student editor had completed the merge to the live article after all. I have now blanked the user draft as WP:COPYARTICLE.

More quality control needed for student contributions

Hi Ian,

The contributions from the Fall 2021 Aquinas College "Question Everything" class are coming in, and, well... a fair number of them are crap. Like this (which I reverted myself), this, this, and, to a lesser extent, this, this and this. Other contributions possibly contain good information but also are written rather poorly or at least unencyclopedically, like this, this and this. All of this creates additional work for editors, and of course makes for more cumbersome reading while the edits remain up in their original form. I'm all for educating the next generation on how to edit Wikipedia, but perhaps there should be more quality control in these classes? For example, maybe any proposed edit by a student should require the teacher and/or Wikipedia Expert (i.e., you) to sign off on it before it goes into the article. (talk page watcher) @Korny O'Near:, I sympathize; you've identified a perennial issue. Don't know what to tell you, other than to go ahead an apply standard policies and guidelines to these student contributions exactly as you would for any other editor, and if that means reverting the edits, then so be it. For new editors, I usually tread more lightly in the edit summary (students or not), and I might tack on a good faith adjective into the Undo summary (as in, "Undid [[WP:GF|good faith]] revision 123456789 by [[User:Example user]]..." and if I leave a message on their talk page about it, I tread lightly there, too. Not sure what else you can do. Wiki Ed folks are understaffed and oversubscribed so I don't see any way they could take on a "sign-off" responsibility for each student edit, but maybe they could communicate with the professor in a general way about such issues when they arise among several students. I understand that time is limited, but really, how long does it take to read one one of these edits and realize it's not good enough for Wikipedia - 10 seconds? And then maybe another 5-10 minutes to write up what's wrong with it? (That's if you really want to be comprehensive.) It's work, but on the other hand, the alternative is that someone else has to do the work - some Wikipedia editor who notices bad writing and has to fix it up and/or revert it. And if that happens six months later, it might be much more difficult at that point to extricate out the bad parts (and of course, by that time many more readers will have been exposed to the bad writing).
If it's not feasible to check edits before they go out, then perhaps this entire "Wiki Ed" project should be re-evaluated. Pedagogical purposes aside, if the average edit by students is of this level of quality, then there's a real argument to be made that overall Wiki Ed is making Wikipedia worse, not better. Perhaps the work should focus on smaller tasks like adding citations to existing statements, rather than adding whole paragraphs of new text, which seems like a recipe for failure. Thanks for responding. I take back some of what I said, then - I assumed that this sample was representative of the whole program, but if it's not, then the problem is not nearly as big as I thought. I'm aware of other bad edits from the program, though, so it's not a totally isolated incident: there's this edit from March, for example, which was quickly reverted. Well, I tried the old way of attempting of how to start something and update. Well! I am completely lost and staring at my computer screen to provide the answers for me. I know how to cut and paste and check email, source information by using wikipedia and I am left with nothing to show. It is like it looks good on paper but did you understand it?-lol- Well, I am committed to making this work. I believe that a little elbow grease is going to require some brain matter too:-) Atleast I can say that I know how to do emoji's....lol

Alright here's how its going down for me.

I will follow the instructions but some how my ADHD is blocking me from finalizing it and seeing my work in a format of a web page! But, I can say the links that I open were there still and the what the last tap that I was in is throwing me off or the feeling of lost in the sauce is more like it.

I will do the exercise and I am not able to view my work, would lead me down the rabbit hole of nothing here. I will continue and follow the links you've sent to and hopefully I will find my report there.

I am going to do nothing but wikipedia as of 10/11/2021 thru 10/12/2021 and if I am still at the starting point. I going to have send out and S.O.S for reforcements.

@Iyannuzzi: Those are errors with the reference template. The message points to the field in the reference where the error is (though it's usually somewhat cryptic). You can edit the fields in the reference template by clicking on the number where it appears in the text while you're in edit mode. But you have to edit them through the link in the text, not the link in the reference section.

I do feel the additional sandbox creates a good deal of confusion, as it's hard enough to get students acquainted with the standard sandbox. On the other hand, I believe I understand the rationale of inserting a potential review step for classes and new editors who are struggling. At any rate, problem solved here! @Liz: Thanks so much for letting me know. I have emailed the instructor. It's possible that that student in editing mobile and doesn't even see the talk page notifications (which is a real problem with the mobile website that I just learned about this summer!) I suspect they didn't intend to move their draft to mainspace, and are trying to fix that problem. I wish more students would reach out to me sooner. Redirect in sandbox

Hello Ian,

I am student and been going through my weekly tutorial and materials, followed the instructions my week 5 course material I drafted my article in the sandbox and then did the move out of sandbox. Now when I moved it out thought I placed it in the wrong area as for the course section I am in didn't recognize any of my work. I now see it in my course section but on my sandpage has a redirect. And I think there may be two of the same articles I made on Wikipedia. I am trying to correct this but no luck finding a solution. Thank you.

Adding to a stub article

Hello!

I am thinking of editing the current page titled Biofilm factory, but noticed there was a warning that it may not meet the guidelines for neologisms. I have not found many sources that mention the term "biofilm factory" specifically. However, the definition listed on the current page is a topic that is not currently expanded upon greatly besides a short paragraph in Biofilm under the "Uses and impact - in industry" section. Is this topic notable enough to be expanded upon? If so, should the title of the article remain the same or be changed?

@Yestothesun: That's a really good question. The topic seems notable enough, the only problem I see is with the title of the article. I would expand it (and link to it from the appropriate section of the biofilm article). Maybe industrial use of biofilms or biofilms in industry would work as an appropriate title...it's a little challenging to fit it into the standard for Wikipedia article titles, but either of those should work. Hi Ian! I noticed a student has been assigned Abigail Thorn for Wikipedia:Wiki Ed/Fort Lewis College/GSS 101 (Fall 2021). I've seen quite a few pages on my watchlist go through student assignment programs and from my experience this sticks out at me as a bad choice of article. It is already as expansive and high-quality as possible given the available sources, modulo improvements that a very experienced Wikipedian would find hard to make. (I've considered taking it to GA or higher soon.) I can only imagine that the assigned student would be overwhelmed in trying to improve an already high-quality article or would introduce unreliable sources and primary content of undue weight (fancruft).

I can reach out to either the instructor or student myself if you'd like, but I thought I was most likely to have this message read and understood by you. I would just advise that you tell one or both of them that choosing a less developed article would make for a much better experience for both student and Wikipedian. Help With Valid Sources

Hello Ian,

My name is Alex. I hope you are well!

I am a student working on a Wikipedia project. I recently changed topics and have run into a problem. I want to edit the 'Jenna Marbles' Wikipedia page as there is barely anything there but I don't want to use sources that are not accepted but this platform.

I understand that sources like Buzzfeed are not reliable, but there are not may secondary sources about Jenna Marbles from reputable websites. I also don't really know how to determine what a reputable website is.

A lot of the information I want to use is in her videos and podcasts but because that is a primary source I don't think I can use those.

Could you tell me what to do here?

@CriminalGoat894: Basically reliable sources would be from major news sources that have a reputation for fact checking. There's a good resource at WP:RSP for common news sources. Beyond this, I recommend that you get in touch with a librarian at your university, or someone from your writing center to help you try to find reliable sources. Environmental migrant article

Student projects

Hello, Ian,

It's that time of year, again, when a few eager student editors feel overconfident about their writing ability and move their projects directly into the main space of the project where they mostly get deleted. I do not know where they get the idea that being in a course for a few weeks gives them the ability to write an article that could pass the review of the New Page Patrol who can be sticklers for abundant sourcing. I encourage all mentors of the Wiki Ed program to communicate to instructors that students don't need their articles to go "live" in the main space to receive a grade. And, in fact, having their pages deleted makes it difficult for instructors to grade their projects as not all students keep a copy of their articles in their Sandboxes. If students do desire to have their articles in the main space of the project, they should submit them for review with AFC.

@Liz: Thanks for the note. There are always some students who come away with the impression that moving their work "live" involves moving their sandboxes to mainspace instead of merging their drafts into existing articles. We've tried to adjust our phrasing a few times to point them in the right direction, but unfortunately we haven't found the right balance yet. Same with the need to not move their work to mainspace to get a grade.
For the minority of students who create new articles, most do it right and going through AFC would only overwhelm it further (a class like this one, would be a good example of students creating new articles and doing it right). The ones who do need that extra help, unfortunately, are the ones who don't pay enough attention to the instructions we give them. I'm working on a revamp of our trainings, but it's slow. Linking Wiki Articles

Hi Ian! I am a student editor, thank you for your offered help and support. I am currently editing Gnotobiosis in User:OMathie/Gnotobiosis. The linking feature has been working near seamlessly until I tried to link "Hans Thierfelder" to this wiki article https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hans_Thierfelder. This article does not appear in the search for the linking feature when I try to link it. Should I just use the "link to external web pages"? I know that the trainings said to avoid linking to external web pages but this is a Wikipedia page. @OMathie: The reason it didn't appear in the link feature is that this is article is on the Spanish Wikipedia. (There's also one on the German Wikipedia). I recommend that you just type the name in and link to the non-existent article on the English Wikipedia. That will create a red link like this: Hans Thierfelder. (talk page watcher) @OMathie:, another thing you can do, is create an inter-language link using Template:Ill (eye ell ell), like this: Hans Thierfelder, and you code it like this: {{ill|Hans Thierfelder|es|de|v=sup}}. The small links take you to the Spanish and German articles. When someone creates the English article, the red link will also turn blue, and the little foreign links will disappear automatically. One other thing: your WP:LEADSENTENCE needs work; the word associated is a weak connecter in this clause: "all the forms of life associated with it". Bryan Maghen

Hi Ian, I am having trouble uploading my original drawing to the article I am editing. The problem is that although my pdf file appears normal, when I upload it, it is too small and blurry on the article. @Bmaghen: the problem is that your images are tiny and saved as .jpg files. If you can export them as a vector file like an .svg, you would get a much better resolution. Failing that, you need to create a higher-resolution jpg. I'm not an expert on file types, and on exporting them from whatever software you're working with, so I can't help you too much. It doesn't look like Wikipedia:Graphics Lab is very active these days, but they do have useful resources and links on that page, including Wikipedia:Graphics Lab/Resources/Uploading standards which might be helpful. GSU Later Indigenous Literatures Wikipedia Project 2021

Hi Ian,

My project group and I are in the process of creating a Wikipedia article for Louise Erdrich's novel The Night Watchman. There are already several articles on Wikipedia with that same title. Our university's Wiki Education course page hyperlinks to an article that is not for Louise Erdrich's novel. However this article: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Night_Watchman_(novel) exists. I did not know who to contact in regards to this. Please let me know what I should do. Currently, our project group in working on this article:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Night_Watchman. I do not know if this article is live on the Wikipedia website, but if it is then it should not have been published yet.

Quick question about deleting a redirect

Hi Ian! I have a quick question about redirects I was hoping you could help with. One of my students initially created the page "Esh shaheinab" and then later realized it should be "Esh Shaheinab" -I'd like to delete the redirect from Esh shaheinab to Esh Shaheinab (as I think capitalization differences are automatically redirected anyways?). Not sure how to delete that redirect despite some googling - do I have to add it to the Redirects for discussion page? Is that a good idea? Thanks so much. @Ninafundisha: capitalisation differences don't redirect automatically, so it's a perfectly good redirect.

Student edits and plagiarism

Hi Ian, I've unfortunately been running into issues with a student editor from Wikipedia:Wiki_Ed/Johnson_County_Community_College/Composition_II_(Fall_2021) at Genetically modified food. Previously they were having WP:MEDRS issues, but I recently had to remove an edit by SweetPo65 (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log) where they directly copy-pasted the entire edit from a source. It should hopefully have undergone rev-del by the time you see this, but I thought I'd leave a note in case you have more direct contact with the instructor. I know at my university, my hands would unfortunately be tied if I caught a student directly copying a source like this. KoA (talk) 04:28, 10 November 2021 (UTC)

@Farid Chbeir: I returned your article to draft space. Sadly, you can't use unpublished interviews as sources on Wikipedia because readers need to be able to verify the sources used. @Figureskatingfan: I don't know a good way to do it, but you can find a list of the 344 courses supported by Wiki Education this term here. But that's just the US and Canada, and just the ones who work with us (there are always a few who choose not to). Hi Ian. Perhaps either you or Helaine could explain to QTpie35 why non-free content cannot be used in User:QTpie35/The Night Watchman. This is a fairly common mistake and such files are mostly removed by bots these days. It only becomes a serious problem if it keeps happening over and over again. Anyway, I removed the file and left an edit summary explaining why. I could also leave a more detailed message on the user's talk page, but maybe it would be better for one of you to do so since they're a student in Wikipedia:Wiki Ed/Georgia State University/Later Indigenous Literatures Fall 2021 (Fall 2021). using Youtube videos

Formatting appears fine in edit mode

I have a question with formatting. When I do an article in my sandbox under the edit mode all the subheadings and text are right where I need them and the layout is perfect for the article. As soon as I save it and have a look under the read as if it would look like to a normal user. It goes all whacked references section disappears and the alignment of some texts and sub headings don't align correct with the photos or section it's suppose to be in.

I am curious if there is something I am missing or just a glitch somewhere causing it. Been trying to find articles on this specific problem and can't find what I am looking for except for general formatting guidelines. Thank you in advance.

@MegaRoc I fixed it for you. What happened was that all the images were running over in the following section, which caused things to be totally messed up. I added the template {{clear}} which fixes this. You can do this by using the Insert -> Template option and search for Clear in the search box. Make sure you add it above the reference section. Hello Ian thank you for the fix solution for that clear template. I see where you added this in there which did fix my references section. So what I did was add the

above each heading which corrected some other issues. Is there something I need to put after the heading for as some of the headings are still not aligned and my text is pushed off from where I want it to be. It appears fine in the edit mode but still off in read mode. Like you did after the references heading by adding

The section Species exhibited on the Farm pre-1965 as you go down I have tried to move text under the 4 images or 3 images and some of the 2 images would look okay and others out of adjustment for consistency of others alike. I have tried to hit enter through visual editing. I tried to put the clear command in source editing and been looking at Wikipedia's help page to find advice on this but can not locate. I am pretty much done with this article but want the formatting to be corrected for visual ease.

@MegaRoc The only way I could figure out to make it fit better is to (a) change the image alignment from right to left, and (b) get rid of the white space. It's all in one edit, if you want to revert.

@Ian Yes I removed a large portion of images near the end which the text was fine then. But when I reduced images I got this formatting issue. All my images are aligned to the left and I have also tried to hit enter to move the text down. But it goes back to where you see it before the changes you made. Which is better than this version for the text don't align where it should be.

That'll probably go out to all editors here in a couple of weeks. It's already on nearly all of the wikis, but English is big enough that we needed to let Ops run some extra tests first, to make sure that none of the servers will fall over when we flip the switch. Yeah, I'm pretty happy with this. The Beta Feature gives you multiple features. I think the [reply] tool is going to be the most popular. BTW, if you keep the Beta Feature on, you'll eventually get the next feature, which will change the appearance of the talk pages. (The point is to make space to add some more information, like how many comments are in a discussion, but when you add information, you have to put it somewhere, and that makes things look different.) So if you discover than everything looks weird some day, then that's what's going on, and you'll have a separate prefs switch to turn it off if you can't get used to it. Question about potential plagiarism

Hi Ian, I am currently working on a Wikipedia project for my class and I seem to have run into an issue. There is a paragraph I am looking to edit as there is not many citations listed and thought it would be beneficial to add citations. I looked up some of the phrases within the paragraph and it seems as though there is a YouTube video with the exact same paragraph listed within the description of the video. I'm not sure if I should remove this paragraph entirely as I am unsure if the previous Wiki author wrote this paragraph or if the creator of the YouTube video creating this paragraph first. @PricklyFish - what's the page and the video? It's possible that it was copied into Wikipedia, but it's also possible that it was copied from Wikipedia. This is the Wikipedia article here, and this is the YouTube video. I also noticed that the second photo on the Wikipedia page seems to have the same caption as uploader of the image and I'm not sure if this would be plagiarism or not. It is the photo of the manakin. @PricklyFish It looks like the video was uploaded on July 9, 2016. If you look at the page history on Wikipedia you can see that the content was added to Wikipedia in December 2014. There are also a few small differences between the passages - the original version of the Wikipedia article is plural ("migrations are" rather than "migration is" and "it's" rather than "it is"); those were changed by a different person a few hours after the article was created.
I'd lean to this being a case of copying from Wikipedia, rather than to it. Ian (Wiki Ed) (talk) 21:35, 15 November 2021 (UTC)

I received a "Speedy deletion nomination" on my talk page, and it claims that my page should be deleted for "unambiguous advertising which only promotes a company, group, product, service, person, or point of view and would need to be fundamentally rewritten in order to become encyclopedic." I'm not exactly sure where this idea came from, and am hoping my page doesn't get deleted so that I can still get a grade in my class for the work I've done. You can find out more about Wikipedia and YouTube at WP:YOUTUBE and WP:YOUTUBE-EL, but there tend to be two basic problems with YouTube videos: they are either (1) user-generated content which is considered original research or (2) they are copyright violating content. Since neither of the two is clearly allowed per relevant Wikipedia policies and guidelines, you have to be really diligent and careful when adding such links which is why it’s often recommended to avoid them altogether. It’s technically relatively simple to add the links themselves, but whether they should be added often requires some serious vetting and digging to make sure relevant policies and guidelines aren’t being violated. So, your classmate is right in a sense that they can be added, but there’s much more involved i figuring out whether they should be added. If you’re unsure whether a specific link is OK, you might want to ask for feedback from one of your Wiki Ed advisors or at WP:RSN or WP:ELN first depending on how you want to use the link in the article. It’s often easier for someone to assess a specific link, then to try and give one general answer that applies to all links. I would suggest, however, avoiding anything which looks unofficial; in other words, anything which looks like content created by someone other than the YouTube channel account holder is probably not going to be OK for Wikipedia’s purposes. — Marchjuly (talk) 01:15, 14 November 2021 (UTC)

@Thinkpins - I think the main problems are (a) that you bolded your section headers (you're just supposed to rely on the default formatting) and (b) that you added an introduction. @Kalinatodorov From a technical standpoint it's just a matter of moving the page to the new title. But in this case, because you are changing the scope of the article, I recommend that you start a move discussion. The first thing to consider is what the sources say do sources tend to discuss the East Bay more generally, or West Oakland (which is, granted, a very narrow geographic area). Or is the whole Bay Area the best focus? Follow the sources.
The procedure to start a "potentially controversial" move is explained on this page: WP:RSPM, but you might want to gauge opinions on the talk page first to see if it might be controversial. If no one objects, then you might want to be bold and rename the page. If there's any disagreement (either before the move, or if someone reverts it) you can do a formal more request. Bubble Tea as the subject of Wiki Education Foundation-supported course assignments

Hi Ian, is it possible to have Bubble Tea blocked from future use as the subject of Wiki Education Foundation-supported course assignments or at least given a years break? Since May 2020 there have been four different groups of students assigned to the page and as far as I can tell their contributions have been a real net negative for the page. I don’t want to bite these newcomers (who don’t really want to be here in the first place) but their edits are disruptive if only in their incompetence and the volume has been too large for the community to keep an eye on. @Horse Eye's Back I know what you mean (there are a few articles that get attention term after term), but I'm not sure if there's a good way to implement this. Since we work with a few hundred instructors, I don't know if there's a way to convey that to them all. There might be a way for the Dashboard to send a message to students if they pick and article that's "too popular", but I'm not sure how hard that would be to implement, and what the unforeseen problems might be. Howard_University

Hello, Ian,

I regret to tell you that over the past 2 weeks, a number of student editors in the Howard University class moved their articles into main space where they were promptly tagged for deletion. If the students need them to get a grade, I can restore them to their sandboxes. I don't usually notice this happen with a particular class but the articles were on interesting subjects so I noticed them when I was patrolling the speedy deletion categories. Liz Read! @Liz I like to save anything that's salvageable and return it to their sandbox in the hope that they might re-write it, and I do think it's a viable choice. Then there are others that are so far from a Wikipedia article that I see almost no hope. In those case I prefer to copy the content of the deleted article, paste it into a Google doc, and share it with the instructor so that they have something to grade. It's disappointing when it happens with a class like this one, which is working on topics that should be in Wikipedia.
I usually get notifications (via the Dashboard) when student work is nominated for deletion (via AFD, PROD or Speedy), so I generally see things and can review them. I've also added this feed to my workflow, so I'm seeing all the student work moved to mainspace. @Amhuggett I fixed the second problem. As far as the first one goes, to remove (or otherwise edit) a source, you need to click on it where it appears in the body of the article, not in the references section. If you click on a reference in edit mode, you'll see a box with an edit button. If you just want to remove a reference, use the delete or backspace key to remove it. @Rshrid Overall it looks pretty good. Your additions to the lead section don't quite get the tone right for the lead - the lead is supposed to be a summary of main points in the article. So rather than saying Effects on racial minorities have most widely been discussed by news sources in terms of increased infection and mortality rates, but..., I would move the "increased infection and mortality" into the first paragraph, and start this paragraph with the long-lasting detriment to educational outcomes and decreased economic stability info.

@GBFEE The should have assigned themselves an article to work on, using the Dashboard but it doesn't look like they did. It also doesn't look like they've done any drafting on-wiki, but the class has a highly customised course timeline, so it's really hard to know (which isn't good; we should talk to the instructor about making sure it's more transparent in the future).

I feel that someone needs to check out the new articles created in the English 203 course (https://dashboard.wikiedu.org/courses/American_University_of_Beirut/English_203_(Fall_2021)/articles/edited); the course description states "This course seeks to develop students’ intellectual viewpoints and a writing voice through writing Wikipedia articles about Arab and Lebanese authors who have little to no digital presence (neither in Arabic nor in English). In order to preserve this literary heritage, this class will work on producing Wikipedia articles about Arab and Lebanese literary figures who might otherwise become long forgotten since they are rarely taught in the Lebanese curriculum's literature courses." I feel that the course description admits that the articles created are likely of non-notable authors (and likely GNG fails), the articles created should be evaluated for notability.

Hi Ian. Similar to #Wikipedia:Wiki Ed/Georgia State University/Later Indigenous Literatures Fall 2021 (Fall 2021) above, perhaps either you or Helaine could post a friendly note to KyleiMontgomery explaining that non-free content cannot be used in User:KyleiMontgomery/Representation of Black women in film. I've just removed two non-free images from the the page, but a bot would've eventually done the same and would've only left a boilerplate edit summary. You might want to also suggest to this student that they carefully read through WP:NFC if they intend to use non-free images on the page if it eventually becomes an article. East Carolina University/American and International Film History Part I (Fall 2021)

I've discovered that quite a few students in this course have done such things as creating their articles in mainspace, linking improperly, and making articles that may need to be rewritten entirely or deleted. Examples include Shiro Asano (cameraman), What Happened in the Tunnel, and A Soldier's Courtship (1896) (all of which I attempted to fix). Non-free content use in student user sandbox

Hi Ian. I came across another student editor using non-free content in their user sandbox. The student also added the same files to Science Fiction, but I removed that as well since it's use also didn't comply with policy (for different reasons than WP:NFCC#9). If the student would like to add any non-free content to the "Science Fiction" article, then they should add non-free use rationales to the files' pages first; otherwise, a bot will simply remove files. In this case with this particular video cover art image though, I think it would be really hard to justify the use of the file per relevant policy. Policy generally allows non-free cover art to be used in stand-alone articles about the work in question for primary identification purposes at the top of the article, but other types of uses or uses in other articles tend to be really hard to justify. -- Marchjuly (talk) 06:14, 30 November 2021 (UTC)

Here's yet another student Ian who also is having image related issues Ian. This student actually uploaded File:WhiteOaksMall.jpg and File:WhiteOaksPublicSchool.jpg without any copyright license at all to use in User:Asafdar4/sandbox. Files uploaded without licenses are eligible for speedy deletion per WP:F4, but another editor (who works a lot in the file namespace) subsequently added a non-free copyright license for each. This made the files now also eligible for speedy deletion per WP:F5 and WP:F6. Basically, unless this student took these photos themselves (which doesn't seems to be the case), the photos are going to need to be treated as non-free content absent the WP:CONSENT of the copyright holder. If the student did take the photos, they should just either re-upload them to Commons with the original c:COM:EXIF data if possible or send a CONSENT email to Wikimedia VRT so that the copyright license can be verified. They would also need to choose a free license from WP:ICT/FL. It's all a bit complicated I know, but some boilerplate notification templates have already been placed on the student's user talk page and they might not know what they mean. -- Marchjuly (talk) 11:58, 30 November 2021 (UTC)

@Marchjuly: Thanks for all your help on this. I've deleted the two obvious non-free uploads. But as far as using non-free content in sandboxes, the problem lies with the fact that when you add files with the visual editor the warning notice for non-free files is very small and doesn't say "don't add this outside of mainspace" and "don't add this without adding an NFCC justification" (which seems like something that would really be worth changing on the VE interface). Without that, I'm not even sure how to communicate this to students in a manner that would stick (though, to be honest, I'm sure it's something worth improving in our trainings).
I think a technical solution to this might be worth investigating. I'll talk to Sage about the feasibility of adding a notification that would let me know if students do this. I'm honestly not sure how much work that would be to implement (since there's a bot that does this, I think it there should be an existing solution that could be adapted, but what do I know about programming). FIWIW, I things like VE and the WP:UPLOAD were created to be used by as many editors as possible as easy as possible and this means whoever created them probably didn't not feel going into the minutiae of non-free content use would be helpful; they might not have even been aware of the relevant policy and guidelines in the first place. Such a thing is really nobody's fault per se because non-free content use is not really one of the things that most editors are going to have to deal with and those that do often only find out about it when they run afoul of things in some way. I'd imagine many editors just assume that every image they see on Wikipedia is OK to use in any way they want because otherwise it wouldn't be being used on the "free encyclopedia that anyone can edit". Similarly, if one type of image (e.g. a photo of a school) can be uploaded and used on Wikipedia, then it should be automatically OK to upload similar images found online and also use them on Wikipedia. Anyway, the same kind of thing happens on Commons all of the time and there's probably no way to avoid good-faith misunderstandings without technically requiring that all image uploads be reviewed somehow in advance. Something like WP:NPP for all new files uploaded to Wikipedia might be a better way to try and keep track of new uploads and get them reviewed as quickly and systematically as possible. Editors who upload files that have established a history of doing so in accordance with relevant policies and guidelines could then be upgraded by an admin to something akin to WP:APAT because their uploads probably need a bit less scrutiny. Of course, this would only work for new uploads and not the reuse of existing files which is where most non-free content problems seem to occur. I'm not sure there's any way to resolve issue with existing files other than dealing with them when and where they're found without severely restricting the ability of pretty much all editors to add images to any Wikipedia pages. TI think there might be some local WMF projects which limit image-related stuff to administrators, but I might be wrong on that. I do know there are some that don't allow any non-free or otherwise locally uploaded file content at all, but I think that has more to do with the local laws of the jurisdiction covering that particular project than anything else. -- Marchjuly (talk) 22:31, 1 December 2021 (UTC)

Personal attacks by student; think that professor is misinterpreting Wikipedia

This is about the AfD for Mireille Saba Redford; a student in the English 203 course that created the article contacted me and personally attacked me for commenting in the deletion discussion that I don't think that making students write articles about likely non-notable people is a good idea. They said that since I write articles about internet personalities, I didn't have any role in commenting in the discussion; they also chose to go to me instead of someone at Wiki Ed, an admin, or the AFD nominator themselves. Additionally, I noticed that in the deletion discussion, the professor stated that the deletion of the article was marginalization simply because it doesn't fit notability standards. It says 'a redirect already exists at Eleanor Foraker, and it cannot be deleted automatically.' The additions you have made are over his Ashland estate in Lexington KY; Not his original house in Paris, KY, which is what the topic is about. I originally made this mistake when I first started researching, but there is already a well-rounded article about the Ashland estate.

Again, I strongly advise you delete any edits you have made so far and that you research more diligently and intently, as the additions you have made are not relevant nor accurate. I would recommend that the research and additions you make pertain to his ventures during the time period in which he lived in Paris, KY. There are records of newspaper articles and biographical information over that time period.

I understand this may be frustrating and inconvenient, but for the sake of the course's intention on providing accurate, well-researched information, it would behoove you to "go back to the drawing board", so to speak.

  • @MattHanc1: I can vouch that Ian is not user Abbh241. Ian is the Wiki Ed staff member assigned to your class that you are taking this semester. As far as tone goes, the saying is that you catch more flies with honey - rather than telling someone to remove their information it's better to WP:BEBOLD and fix the information and then explain why the changes were made. For example, I would personally recommend explaining the removal along these lines:
Hi! I saw that you added information to the article Dr. Henry Clay House, however I removed the content because this article pertains to his house near Paris, Kentucky as opposed to the house located in Ashland estate in Lexington KY. Since there are two locations and the one in Lexington is on the historical register, it would be better to create a separate article for that home, as it would be confusing to mix the two locations together. It's great that you are excited about editing, but be cautious when adding new information - it's easy to add incorrect information, especially when it deals with two locations with similar or the same names.

Redirect for Digital divide in Education

Hi Ian, you mentioned you returned my article to my sandbox because it was empty initially but that was a sandbox draft that I had moved in error! I later moved the correct sandbox with my full article and learnt it was redirected but now I cannot seem to be able to find the article again. @KennyOkg I fixed the formatting so that the whole article isn't written as header text, but now the article needs headers.
Some things you still need to do
  • Wikipedia articles describe what reliable sources say about a topic, they don't speak directly to readers. So a sentence like "Suggestions on how digital divide can be viewed can be found here" doesn't get the tone right. In addition, that sentence points to a figure on Wikimedia Commons (which isn't itself a reliable source). In addition, pointing readers to an image without alt text isn't going to help people who use screen readers.
  • Everything you add to Wikipedia needs to be tied directly to a reliable source. After the statement, there should be a source. You can use a single source to support several sentences in a row, if it supports everything you say in those sentences, but you need to have at least one source per paragraph, and you shouldn't have any text after the final reference in a paragraph.
  • You shouldn't include external links in the body of an article, and you shouldn't use a random YouTube channel as a source. It should be apparent to readers who "Izaitulz zzz" is and why you consider them a reliable source.

Wholesale deletion of article content

Hi Ian. Please take a look at the talk page and contributions for student editor User talk:Mmpepl22. The editor has virtually wiped all existing sourced content from their chosen article, Greek city-state patron gods and replaced it with the contents of their sandbox. They've given no reason for any of this. Cluebot reverted the change automaticaly but there now seem to be 2 articles on the same topic, almost identicaly titled apart from a minor orthographic difference, and a mess of variants and redirects. I've no idea how to undo the confusion, or even if I should try. I edited the article quite heavily in the none-too-distant past, so I don't entirely trust my own judgment in dealing with this. Thanks for the intervention. One of the issues arising from this is the fact that the student editor overwrote (or completely ignored) some well-sourced and nuanced existing information. In the past, when similar problems have arisen with student-edited work (and sadly, on many occasions), I've simply reverted or replaced; but this particular student evidently intended a complete and unjustified replacemnt of all the existing sourced article text with their own version. It's a difficult topic. They have some sound sources inline but don't seem to have used them with much care or grasped the fundamentals of the topic, and have made several naive errors of interpretation. I'm not sure they're anywhere near meeting the terms of their stated brief. Haploidavey (talk) 16:55, 14 December 2021 (UTC)
Yeah, there are plenty of problems. We tell students to add their improvements section-by-section or paragraph-by-paragraph specifically to avoid over-writing stuff. Instructor repeatedly removing redirect causing template editor protection

The instructor User:Mkibona attempted to remove the redirect on Ratchet Feminism multiple times, to the point where the redirect needed to be protected so only admins could edit it. This is highly inappropriate behavior from an instructor, and considering how the articles created for the course they taught were mostly of poor quality, I recommend that you talk to them about this behavior. wizzito | say hello! 23:27, 14 December 2021 (UTC)

@Wizzito and Ohnoitsjamie: I don't get why this is a problem. While the article needs work, the claim that "ratchet feminism" is non-notable is factually incorrect. In fact, there's a solid body of peer reviewed literature on the topic. Edit-warring over a redirect and not engaging in discussion about it is problematic, which is why the redirect is protected. If a consensus is established that the topic is notable enough to merit a standalone article, the protection can be removed. OhNoitsJamie Talk 17:04, 15 December 2021 (UTC)
@Ohnoitsjamie Sure it is. I did explain to Mkibona that the problem was sourcing and tone (since there's plenty of literature on the topic) and it's unfortunate that they misunderstood what I said. But the edit warring goes both ways - after all, Vaticidalprophet made an edit (based on an incorrect rationale) and Mkibona undid it. Per BRD, the next step on their part is to engage, or take it to AFD. To chose to edit war, with a relative newbie, seems extremely BITEy. So yeah, I find this very annoying. And personally, I think this stuff is a great case of using bureaucracy to BITE a newbie.

Beyond Petroleum class, students aren't assessing content in existing articles

Hey Ian, in several of the articles edited by students in the Beyond Petroleum class, I have had to remove redundant or poorly cited content. The students don't appear to be assessing the existing content in the article, to see if what they created in their sandbox is redundant, then dumping the whole draft into the article as sections, Sadads (talk) 00:38, 16 December 2021 (UTC)

Oxygen cycle page

I have concerns about the main figure with the O2 fluxes numbers assigned to various sources and sinks. I understand that they are taken from the rather old reference dating back to Walker, 1980 (book chapter). There, the annual O2 fluxes were estimated (land + ocean photosynthesis) to amount to total of 300 Gton O2/year. However, the C cycle much more recent estimates suggest that the C flux due to land + ocean photosynthesis is about 210 Gton C/year (see the C cycle wiki page and references). These numbers don't match - since one stored carbon atom (weight 12g/mol) from the atmospheric CO2 causes a "release" of one O2 molecule (weight 32g/mol). I that suggest this matter needs attention. It would be good to link the O2 cycle fluxes mole numbers to the C cycle fluxes numbers (they don't have to match perfectly, since there is a net gain in atmospheric CO2 and the net loss in O2 is perhaps harder to measure), but some discussion and relevant references would be very useful.
