Elisabeth Cruciger[edit]

The German WP has the poet as "Elisabeth Cruciger (bzw. Kreuziger, Creutziger etc.)". Your version is not among the variants. So far I kept the name in the English WP as I found it. Now I change it to Cruciger all (!) occurences. It's important for a red link to be uniform throughout WP, imo. Hi. I concede that Cruciger is probably best in this context; I thought that I had usually seen (and heard) it as Creuziger. With these old names it is often a difficult call, even after a bit of research. In my own family there have been at least ten variants of the surname. The English WP has main article for Caspar Creuziger (with variants) the elder which states he is father of Caspar Cruciger the younger (whose page shows no variants) who was Elisabet(h)'s husband. Oi! I just did a google search which yielded as many Elisabeth Creuzigers as Kreutzigers, mostly in English, although the "K" is definitely a German modernised spelling. Elisabeth Cruziger search only shows results in German, but Elisabeth Cruciger show results in both languages. When I refer to books that I own, most of the texts say Creuziger. Looking at hymnals it appears as Creuziger in older publications such as the Braunschweiger Gesangbuch (1698), Creuzerin(!) in Evangelisch-Lutherisches Gesangbuch (1848) and other hymnals published in the 19th century, but as Cruciger in all my hymnals after 1970. I favour the Braunschweiger, but only because it is the oldest. I have been unable to determine that any research on the name prompted any of the variants. Do you know of any WP policy that addresses this problem? If we were to write her article for enWP, should we use Cruciger w. variants hoping to add some consistency among the articles? Should more reasearch be done on Caspar the younger to see if variants should be added to his article? I value your suggestions.

Thanks for your research! In our family we also had name variants. I think to admit that there isn't the perfect solution is a good approach. To take Cruciger - to be conform with de-WP (and your hymnals after 1970) - and list variants together with their sources sounds reasonable. The variants can be established as redirects, but only for an existing article. That was my reason to keep all occurences consistent. Even for an article which is still red you can see what links - but only if they are the same, of course. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 22:19, 2 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
