History[edit]

The iPad Pro was first announced during Apple's Special "Hey Siri" Keynote on September 9, 2015 in San Francisco. During the keynote, the mobile device was announced to be released sometime in November. On November 9, Apple Press released a statement saying that the iPad Pro will be available for online orders starting November 11.[1] The tablet was made available for purchase at Authorized Apple Retail Stores and limited Resellers on November 13. The tablet is offered in gold, space gray, and silver with three different storage and network configurations. Specifications and Features[edit]

The Apple iPad Pro features a 12.9 -inch (diagonal) LED-backlit widescreen multi-touch Retina display with a 2732 by 2048 resolution at 264 pixels per inch (ppi).[2] The iPad Pro uses technology and display elements from the 5K Retina iMac in order to cope with the 5.6 million pixels, contrast ratio, and brightness offered on the tablet. [3]The multi-touch display includes a fingerprint resistant oleophobic coating and anti-reflective coating. The iPad pro is powered by a 64 -bit architecture A9X chip with a built-in M9 motion coprocessor. Similar to the iPad Air 2 and iPad mini 4, the iPad Pro also offers Touch ID capability, an 8MP rear facing iSight camera and 1080p HD video recording. New features on the iPad Pro include a smart connector for Apple's Smart Keyboard and four high-fidelity stereo speakers. The iPad's Smart Connector technology is an interface method that allows the iPad Pro to communicate with and power accessories that have been designed for it.[4] The interface is able to transfer both power and data, so accessories paired with the iPad Pro do not need batteries. The redesigned speaker housings are machined directly into the iPad's unibody enclosure and sealed with a carbon fiber cap. The four speakers are located in pairs on the top and bottom of the device, and adjust sound accordingly based on the orientation of the device. All four speakers produce bass frequencies, but the two speakers located at the top of the tablet are dedicated to higher frequencies. The iPad Pro has a 38.5 watt battery that offers 10 hours when surfing the web on wifi, watching videos, or listening to music. Over LTE network connection, the iPad Pro's battery lasts for 9 hours when surfing the web. The iPad Pro features 4GB LPDDR4 of random access memory (RAM) for processing applications and multitasking. [5]

Accessories[edit]

There are two Apple accessories that work specifically with the iPad Pro: the Smart Keyboard and Smart Pencil. The accessories are sold separately and are available for purchase online and in stores. The Apple Smart Keyboard retails for $229 CAD, and the Smart Pencil retails for $129 CAD.

Smart Keyboard[edit]

The Smart Keyboard is a standalone wireless hardware keyboard that works in conjunction with iPad Pro. The Smart Keyboard docks with the tablet using Smart Connectors located on the side of the iPad Pro. The Smart Keyboard is 4mm thick and does not include any wires or battery components. There is a thin sheet of nylon etched with metal inside the layers of the Smart Keyboard, which serves as the base conductive material for a two-way flow of power and data provided by the Smart Connector.[6] The Smart Keyboard requires no physical battery as it is powered by the iPad Pro. The fabric of the Keyboard is coated in a water and stain resistant material, making it resistant to spills.

Apple Pencil[edit]

The Apple Pencil is a stylus designed to work exclusively with the iPad Pro. It mimics the sensation of using a paintbrush, pencil, or pen. Pressure and positioning sensors built into the Apple Pencil allow it to detect a range of forces, enabling pressure-sensitive drawing and writing. A light press results in a lighter line, while a thicker line can be drawn by pressing the Apple Pencil harder against the screen. The Apple Pencil has a 12 hour battery life and charges through the built-in lightning connector. The lightning connector on the Apple Pencil can be charged by connecting it to the lightning port on the iPad Pro. 15 seconds of charging produces 30 minutes of battery life for the Apple Pencil.

Operating System[edit]

The iPad Pro runs on Apple's current operating system: iOS 9.1. iOS 9.1 on the iPad Pro enables features such as Split-Screen multitasking for improved productivity and interactivity between applications. iOS 9.1 also offers a low power mode that temporarily reduces power consumption on a user's device. When the feature is turned on, mail fetch, Hey Siri, background app refresh, automatic downloads, and some visual effects are reduced or turned off.
