Waves Hairstyle[edit]

Waves (hairstyle) is a hairstyle designed by males to have rows of short curls along the surface of the hair. These rows of short curls make it wavy with proper treatment. In order to achieve this hairstyle [1] you must spend the majority of the time brushing the hair in a pattern accordingly and using a hair moisturizer to ensure the hair is laid down along the surface of the scalp. Also hair moisturizer keeps the hair intact and does not ruin the hairstyle. The most common type of hairstyle pattern used by males is "360 waves", Hairfinder [2] this is when the hair is brushed in a particular pattern were along the perimeter of the hair, a 360 degree angle of waves are formed.

Materials[edit]

  • Hairbrush Used to manipulate the hair with constant brushing to keep it flat and curly. Types of brushes used are soft, medium and hard bristles. The shorter the hair length, the softer the brush bristles. The longer the hair length, the harder the brush bristles. This is the most important material to achieve "360 waves".
  • Hairstyling Product Used to hold the hair in place and keeps it moist for future brushing. There are more than one hairstyling products used for waves that come in many shapes and sizes. The most common product used by males for waves are called "sportin waves". This product is moist for the hair, keeps it firm and in place.
  • Du-rag A piece of cloth used to protect the hair from damaging the wave hairstyle. Du-rags are used mostly for sleeping at night or during the day. Other males use them for additional help to keep the hair firm and in place with a hairstyling product already in the hair. Without this material it will be difficult to maintain the wave hairstyle.

Technique[edit]

To obtain the "360 wave" pattern, it requires a hairbrush with medium or hard [3] depending on the length of the hair. It must be brushed in a particular direction for each of the sides. By brushing from the top of the head to the front, from the top of the head to the side of the head on each side and from the top of the head to back of the head. Initially, the top of the head is where the brushing should start from and then extending it to the rest of the head. Repetition with this is key due to the fact that the hair needs to be curly in order to form the row of waves with the help from the hair moisturizer. Each of the sides must be brushed equally and often. Not enough brushing would result in little to no waves or curls in a certain section of the hair.

Wolfing[edit]

This process is for males that have the wave hairstyle. The term "wolfing" [4] is slang for growing the hair without having a haircut and continuing with the brushing process. This process increases wave depth for the hair due to the fact that the curls becomes longer after a period of time of not cutting it. Males on average, "wolf" for about four to six weeks before cutting it. As a result, once cut, waves will increase in visibility.

Duration[edit]

Depending on the texture and the length of the hair, it takes anywhere from three weeks to a few months to achieve the wave pattern hairstyle throughout the entire perimeter of the head.

Barbershop[edit]

Cutting of the hair is a key priority for achieving significant results with "360 waves". The barber has the responsibility of cutting the hair that has been brushed numerous times. Thus, forming short curls. Furthermore, it is important to notify the barber about the type of caesar cut in order to achieve the results wanted for the "360 waves". The hair must be cut at a length were it is visible. Specifically, the hair should be cut at level two. Levels [5] represent hair length for caesar cuts, levels vary from one to three. The lower the number the shorter the hair length it would be to the scalp. If the hair is cut too short, there is a possibility the curls will disappear and will have to start over the brushing process to obtain the curls again.
