From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Baron Focko[1], also called Adalpert von Vucckingen,[2] is a semimythical Bavarian nobleman who lived in the 6th century AD. He is given attribution for the founding of the now Austrian villages of Fucking and Fugging which were both named after him. However, it is argued that the story is a myth and that the names originated much later.

Folklore[edit]

Austrian folklore claims that Focko founded the villages of Fucking and Fugging (which was formally also called Fucking but changed its name).[3] When it was founded, the addition of -ing to the name was to denote "area of Focko's people".[4] However, modern journalists claim that Fucking was founded in 1070 after Focko supposedly founded it and that the modern spelling was only adopted in the 18th century.[5] However, other sources have argued that the names were a tribute to Focko rather than a reference being founded by him.[6]

Some sources say that the village was originally named "Vucking" after Adalpert von Vucckingen but was changed to Fucking in 1826 following Austrian Empire cartographers formalising an official change of "V" to "F".[2]
