Renegade Game Studios (frequently abbreviated RGS) is a game company[2] based in Escondido, California, United States, that creates and publishes board games, card games and role-playing games. It is also known for publishing the board game Power Rangers: Heroes of the Grid and co-publishing a variety of games based on Oni Press graphic novels, including those based on the Scott Pilgrim graphic novel series.

History[edit]

Renegade Game Studios was founded in 2014 by its President and Publisher Scott Gaeta. Prior to founding the company, Gaeta’s industry experience includes VP and director-level leadership[3] at Decipher, Inc., the Upper Deck Company , and Cryptozoic Entertainment (which he co-founded in 2010[4] and was COO until his departure to found RGS).

Gaeta told ICV2 the publisher would initially focus on, “light to medium hobby strategy games” and announced announced five titles it would publish: Gravwell, Escape from the 9th Dimension, The Doom That Came to Atlantic City, Word Whimsy, and two titles designed by Munchin ilustrator John Kovalic (ROLF! and Double Feature)[5].

The following month, the company announced it would publish FUSE, designed by Kane Klenko[6]. In 2015 the company announced several more titles including a Renegade-edition version of the critically-lauded and out of print Snow Tails [7] and the TableTop_(web_series) featured game Lanterns [8](co-published with FoxTrot Games)[9].

As the company’s game offerings grew, so did its team. In 2016, Sara Erickson (of iEllo and Cryptozoic) joined Renegade Game Studios as Director of Sales and Marketing[10]. Anita Osburn (previously of Upper Deck, Blizzard Entertainment and Spin Master[11]) also joined as Creative Director later that year. The following year saw the addition of Leisha Cummings (of Cryptozoic and Upper Deck) as Director of Operations [12] and Dan Bojanowski (of Upper Deck and Decipher) as Senior Producer[13]. In 2020, veteran game designer Matt Hyra joined the company as Senior Game Designer.[14]

Since its founding, Renegade Game Studios has published both internally-developed original titles as well as titles in partnership with other co-publishers. As such, the catalog offerings of the company spans multiple categories (including family games, strategy games, miniatures games and roleplaying games)[15] and continues to grow.

Notable Partnerships[edit]

During development, Hasbro acquired Saban’s Power Rangers, but the game continued development with the new partnership between Hasbro and Renegade Game Studios. *Foxtrot Games In 2015 Foxtrot Games partnered with Renegade Game Studios to publish and distribute Lanterns: The Harvest Festival [30]; a game that would eventually be featured on the 4th season of TableTop (webseries)[31], hosted by Wil Wheaton.
