From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

St German's House is a recently demolished annex to Hope Hall, one of the University of Exeter Halls of Residence. It was located in the Streatham Campus, and served as a catered facility to the 24 residents it housed. An accommodation overlooked by most undergraduates, it was quite notable in providing its residents a rather favorable experience of university life over other residences due to its many advantages. In addition to being not too far from [The Lemon Grove], St German's House was one of the nearest in proximity to the town centre, it therefore was arguably the best accommodation for optimum travel for students, allowing easier beer trips, and generally providing an overall insouciant lifestyle.

The building itself comprised of 16 bedrooms; 8 shared and 8 single, with males and females occupying the bedrooms in the ground floor and first floor respectively. The ground floors layout consisted of one kitchen, one toilet and a shower room situated in one of the shared bedrooms. The first floor had two shower rooms, two bathrooms, and two toilets which were located on the landing space, an airing cupboard was also situated here, which on more than one occasion provided an ideal location to hide from other student's during hide and seek games.

The house also served as a haven for students during summer as not only was it yards from the outdoor swimming pool, a suntrap was situated at the back of the house, allowing students to conduct various social activities such as trolley barbecues, pool games, and Star Wars cinema.

Trivia[edit]

The residents of St German's House between September 2005 and July 2006 had an unusually high level of left-handedness; a total of eight out of twenty-four, 23% above the national average.

The building itself was over 130 years old.

Ironically despite the many signs accumulated over each academic year from various alcohol induced incidents, the main sign for St German's House was in turn stolen from another Student.
