  2. ^ The Sumerian king list (SKL) is a regnal list that records up to 139 kings—three of whom were from Awan and apparently held the kingship (Sumerian: 𒉆𒈗, romanized: nam-lugal) over both: Awan and Sumer (Sumerian: 𒆠𒂗𒄀, romanized: kién-g̃i(-r)) after the fall of the first dynasty of Ur. Moreover: a Susian regnal list (the Susian dynastic list) names an additional 24 rulers (twelve from Awan and a further twelve from Shimashki; both of which—along with Susa—are considered to have been major cities occupied by the Elamites). Some have suggested that the first three Awanite rulers mentioned on the Susian dynastic list may have been the same three on the SKL said to have ruled over both Awan and Sumer.
