The Mac Weekly is a student newspaper serving Macalester College in Saint Paul, Minnesota. It was founded in 1914.[1] It has been recognized for its work by the Associated Collegiate Press.[2]The paper accepts paid advertising and is editorially independent from the college.[3]

Early history[edit]

The Weekly was founded in 1914 as a four-page weekly paper publishing every Tuesday. The founding editorial board was coed and was led by Editor-in-chief A. B. Hood and Managing editor W. M. Stronach.[4]

The Weekly was preceded by The College Echo which published from 1886 through 1898.

"Colonial Macalester"[edit]

On November 1, 2019, The Mac Weekly published an issue containing the essay "The complicated celebration and remembering of Edward Duffield Neill". Edward Duffield Neill (1823-1893) was Macalester's first president and the namesake of Neill Hall, a campus building. The essay elicited an immediate reaction from former Macalester president Brian Rosenberg and the college's board of trustees, as it pointed out Neill's racist statements regarding Native Americans of the time and his culturally insensitive exhumation of their burial sites.[5][6][7] Before the end of the month, the hall had been renamed as the "Humanities Building".[8] The paper was commended by the Poynter Institute for its advocacy of racial justice.[9][10]
