A marriage is a socially, religiously, or governmentally recognized interpersonal relationship. Marriages are usually sexually intimate, and are often created as a contract. Marriages create affinal kinship ties which may obligate sharing and transfer of resources. Almost all human societies have some form of marriage. People become married for many different reasons. These may include: to publicly declare love and/or companionship; to legitimize sexual relations and procreation; to form a family unit; to strengthen social and economic stability; and to nurture and educate offspring.
