Richard P. Mislan, PhD (born 1968), known as Rick, is an American educator, inventor, creator, entrepreneur, and veteran. Mislan currently teaches courses at Rochester Institute of Technology Saunders College of Business in the Management of Information Systems program. Mislan also serves as an advisor to numerous U.S. government agencies and corporations. [1] In 2009, he created the Mobile Forensics World Conference [2] [3] [4] [5] [6] and the Small Scale Digital Device Journal [7] and served as a Policy, Law, and Management Faculty Member with the Center for Education and Research in Information Assurance and Security (CERIAS) while at Purdue University. Later, in 2013, with his daughters, he created a children's book, RITchie Finds His Stripes [8] [9] crafted around the RIT Tigers mascot, RITchie who he named in 1989. [10] [11]


In 2020, Rick created unique, immersive world training environments for the ESL Global Cybersecurity Institute [12] [13] and a 15-week immersive Cybersecurity Bootcamp [14] [15] [16] [17] [18] in 2020 to meet the demands of cybersecurity job opportunities.

In 2024, at the Rochester Institute of Technology ImagineRIT festival, Mislan spearheaded the creation of the World's Largest KerPlunk (game) [19] [20] [21] , with the blessing of inventor Eddy Goldfarb. [22]

Biography[edit]

Education and early career[edit]

Rick attended the Rochester Institute of Technology from 1986 to 1991 where he majored in Professional and Technical Communications. He was also on a military scholarship in the United States Army Reserve Officers' Training Corps program to be commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Signal Branch. During his time at RIT he served as a resident advisor and a disc jockey at WITR Radio. He also named the newly appointed RIT Tigers mascot, RITchie.

Upon graduation, Rick was commissioned into the U.S. Army National Guard and served in various units as an Electronics and Communications Warfare Officer. This included service with the 42nd Infantry Division in Rochester, New York, the 164th Air Defense Artillery Brigade in Daytona Beach, Florida and the 417th Signal Battalion in Perry, Florida, and the 125th Infantry Regiment in Wyoming, Michigan.

During this time, Rick worked at the Tallahassee Democrat in Tallahassee, Florida, as a graphic artist, at Buddy Taylor Middle School in Palm Coast, Florida as a Technology Teacher, and then at Fremont Public Schools and Newaygo County Intermediate School District as a Technology Director in Fremont, Michigan.

Mobile Forensics and the Cyber Forensics Lab at Purdue University[edit]

After earning his Master's degree at Ferris State University in Big Rapids, Michigan, Rick taught courses in mobile device security at Ferris State, and then went on to Purdue University to teach courses in Small Scale Digital Device Forensics. While at Purdue, Rick created the Mobile Forensics World Conference, and the Small Scale Digital Device Journal. Additionally, working with the National Institute of Standards and Technology, Mislan was reviewing editor on several documents related to PDA, Cellphone, and Mobile Device Forensics. Cybersecurity, immersive training and cyber risk and resilience at RIT[edit]

As an expert in mobile security and general cybersecurity topics, Mislan returned to his alma mater, RIT, and serves as a senior lecturer in Saunders College of Business [31] [32] [33] at RIT. [36] [37] [38] [39] [40] [41] [42] As an academic, throughout his time at Purdue and RIT, Mislan published numerous articles related to the topics of mobile forensics, mobile security and cybersecurity. As the Creative Director for the ESL Global Cybersecurity Institute, Mislan created immersive world training environments for the newly built Cyber Range [47] [48] similar to those of the IBM Cyber Range [49] and a 15-week immersive Cybersecurity Bootcamp in 2020 to meet the demands of cybersecurity job opportunities.

During COVID, Mislan developed the Saunders Cyber Speaker Series [50] [51] [52] [53] [54] [55] [56] [57] [58] where he invited indusry experts to speak on topics related to his course Cyber Risk and Resilience where studentsstudy the implentation and usage of the NIST Cybersecurity Framework
