Benjamin Segun Aribisala is a Professor of Computer Science and the current substantive Vice Chancellor of Oduduwa University, Ipetumodu, Ile Ife, Osun State, Nigeria.

Early life and Education[edit]

Professor Benjamin Segun Aribisala is a native of Ikoyi, Ikole Ekiti, Ikole Local Government of Ekiti State, South Western Nigeria. He attended Saint Paul II primary School at ikole Ekiti and Holy Apostolic High School, Asin, Ikole Ekiti, Ekiti State where he obtained the West African Senior School Certificate. Thereafter he obtained a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics at Ondo State University (Now Ekiti State University, Ado Ekiti, EKSU, EKSU, Nigeria from September 1989 to April 1994 where he emerged as the best graduating student in the Department of Mathematical Science. He then proceeded to Federal University of Technology Akure FUTA), Nigeria, where he completed his Master’s degree in Computer Science in December 1999. Benjamin Aribisala obtained his PhD degree in Computer Science from the University of Birmingham, UK in 2006 BHAM.. In addition to his educational qualifications, Benjamin Aribisala has professional certifications in Practical Applications of Data Mining and Evolutionary Computation (University of Birmingham, 2005), Good Clinical Practice (University of Edinburgh, 2012), Database Management System (Oracle, 2014), Big Data Analytics (IBM, 2015), and several others.

Career[edit]

He became a Graduate Assistant in 1995 and rose through the ranks to become a full Professor of Computer Science in 2013. He is the first substantive Professor of Computer Science in Lagos State University LASU. His research and teaching career cover 2 Universities in Nigeria and 3 Universities in the United Kingdom; these are, University of Ado Ekiti, Lagos State University, University of Birmingham (England, UK), Newcastle University (England, UK) and University of Edinburgh (Scotland, UK). He was the HOD of Computer Science in LASU from 2014 to 2018, Dean of the Faculty of Science in LASU from 2018 to 2020, Chairman of LASU ICT Advisory Board from 2016 to December 2020 and the Director of ICT in LASU from July 2020 to December 2020. He was a member of the Governing Council of LASU and a member of the Board of Governors of Lagos State University College of Medicine from 2018 to 2020. Benjamin Aribisala initiated Postgraduate Diploma (PGD), MSc and PhD in the Department of Computer Science in LASU and he has led the Department to develop about 10 software packages, some of them are currently in use in LASU.

Research and Honour[edit]

Professor Benjamin Segun Aribisala has over 100 scientific articles and he has given presentations to both local and international audience all over the world, ranging from Nigeria to USA, China, Canada, Austria, Germany, Portugal, South Africa, Botswana, Kenya, Tanzania, Jordan and the United Kingdom. He has won many international awards, e.g. Young Investigators Award from Society for Brain Mapping and Therapeutics, Los Angeles USA in 2015. In 2017, he won the Best Paper Award at the SCI-GAIA European Organisation Conference, Pretoria, South Africa. He is a member of the Technical Advisory Board for African Open Science Platform (AOSP) with the head office in South Africa. He is a member of Nigerian Computer Society, British Computer Society and the society for brain mapping and therapeutics. Benjamin Aribisala’s research interests cut across the field of Computer vision, medical image analysis and Artificial Intelligence. He uses Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), functional MRI (fMRI), Diffusion Tensor Imaging (DTI), blood flow and other imaging techniques for understanding human brains. He is also interested in many other inter-related areas of computer science, these include: Pattern recognition, signal processing, computer graphics, brain imaging, machine learning, modelling & simulation, and mathematical modelling. He uses scientific principles and approaches to solve clinical problems. The goal of his research is to improve diagnosis and quality of life.


Benjamin Aribisala is a member of several national and international professional organizations, for example Nigerian Computer Society (NCS), Computer Professionals (Registration Council of Nigeria), CPN, Society for Brain Mapping and Therapeutics (SBMT, USA), Scottish Imaging Network: A Platform for Scientific Excellence (SINAPSE), Organisation of Human Brain Mapping (OHBM), British Computer Society (BCS), International Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine (ISMRM), British Machine Vision Association (BMVA) and Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE)

Personal life[edit]

Professor Benjamin Aribisala was born into a polygamous family and raised amongst 14 children. His father was the late High Chief Istrael Bamidel Aribisala, the Alawe of Ikoyi and his mother is Mrs. Felicia Fayemi Aribisala. Special assignments and community development[edit]

Professor Benjamin Segun Aribisala is the current Vice Chancellor of Oduduwa University, Ipetumodu, Ile Ife. The Chancellor of Oduduwa University is HRE Dr. Rahmon Adegoke Adedoyin, a business mogul and educationist and the Maye of Yorubaland. Benjamin Aribisala was the Director, ICT Directorate, Lagos State University. He was a member of the Governing Council, Lagos State University. He also served as the Chairman of a subcommittee of Africa Open Science on Policy formulation for ICT infrastructure, South Africa. He was formally the Dean of the Faculty of Science, Lagos State University. He was a Member, CV and Publication Quality Assurance Committee, Lagos State University. He was also a Member, Adhoc Committee on Promotional Space Calculation, Central A&P, including a Member of Central A&P, Lagos State University. He was the Chairman, e-Senate Committee, Lagos State University. He was also the a Chairman, ICT VC Advisory Committee, Lagos State University. Additionally, he was the Head of Department, Department of Computer Science, and Dean, Faculty of Science in Lagos State University.
