An online game is a place that takes place on the internet where communication and real-time interaction takes place with another user(s). It includes a variety of platforms such as Mobiles devices, PC's, Consoles where they can play many different video game genre's such as strategy, first person shooter, RPG or MMORPG games. The industry has recently proved (last 10 years) that it has been a quite profitable and is still growing. [1] In the early 2000's, revenues for almost all games have been dependent on brick and mortar sales which staggered the profits for many of the companies as they were dependent on these sales. Though this changed in the 2010's when more video games would be released with the goal of profiting from software as a service or specifically games as a service [2]. This profit strategy has become more popular and in 2019 was reported that the online game industry had a revenue of $16.9 billion dollars.[3]

Features of a online game include consisting of simple text based environments to complicated graphical environments, could have a leaderboard system where players are able to see other players statistics, to a game where there is direct competition such as Call of Duty, Fortnite, or Pokémon. [4]

Online games are continuously evolving to satisfy the pleasure of more players and have more players sticking to that game including people of different nationalities', different age groups and different social groups. There has also growing interest in the field of scientific research, one area in particular focuses on the behavior of gamers affecting their day to day life[5]. For example, global gaming communities have developed universal slangs which could be recognized and used in various parts of the world. some that are not limited to, but included are "pwn" , "noob", "GL HF" and "AFK" .
