Schizoid personality disorder (SPD or SzPD) is characterized by a long term pattern of little desire for social relationships and limited emotions.[1] Those affected have little concern regarding others opinions of them.[1] This exists across all situations.[1] Symptoms start by early adulthood.[1] Social isolation often results.[2]

The cause is unclear.[1] Risk factors include family history, which is estimated to contribute about 30% of the risk.[1][2] It is classified as a cluster A personality disorders.[1] Diagnosis is based on the symptoms, after ruling out other possible causes such as autism spectrum disorder and depression.[1][2]

Treatments have not been well studied.[2] Some evidence supports the use of counselling.[2] Medications may be used to treat associated conditions such as depression.[2] Most people with the condition do not see it is a problem and thus do not actively seek out help for it.[2] Long term outcomes are frequently poor.[2]

It is estimated to affect 3 to 5% of people.[1] It occurs more often in males than females.[1] The disorder was first included in the DSM-III in 1980.[2]
