Fostamatinib, sold under the brand names Tavalisse and Tavlesse, is a medication used to treat chronic immune thrombocytopenia (ITP).[2][3] It is used in cases were other medications have not worked.[2] It is taken by mouth.[2]
Common side effects include diarrhea, high blood pressure, nausea, respiratory infection, dizziness, liver problems, rash, abdominal pain, tiredness, chest pain, and low white blood cells.[2] Use in pregnancy may harm the baby.[2] It is a tyrosine kinase inhibitor which blocks the enzyme spleen tyrosine kinase (SYK).[3] This reduces the immune system's destruction of platelets.[3]
Fostamatinib was approved for medical use in the United States in 2018 and in Europe in 2020.[1][3] In the United Kingdom a dose of 150 mg twice per day costs about £4,600 per month as of 2021.[5] This amount in the United States costs about 13,000 USD.[6]
