Aaron Marcus (born May 22, 1943) is an American user-interface and information-visualization designer, as well as computer graphics artist.
Biography[edit]
Aaron Marcus received a B.A. in Physics from Princeton University in 1965, and then went on to study at the Yale University School of Art and Architecture, where he received a B.F.A. and M.F.A. in 1968.
In 1967, he became the world's first graphic designer to be involved full-time with computer graphics.
In 1982, he founded Aaron Marcus and Associates, Inc. (AM+A), a user-interface design and consulting company, where he is currently President and Principle Designer/Analyst.
He has written over 250 articles and written/co-written five books. He has published, lectured, tutored, and consulted internationally for more than 40 years, and has been an invited keynote/plenary speaker at conferences of ACM/SIGCHI, ACM/SIGGRAPH, Usability Professionals Association (UPA), and the Human Factors and Ergonomic Society (HFES).
Work[edit]
In the 1970s he programmed a prototype desktop publishing page-layout application for the Picturephone at AT&T Bell Labs, programmed virtual reality spaces while a faculty member at Princeton University, and directed an international team of visual communicators as a Research Fellow at the East-West Center in Honolulu.
In the early 1980s he was a Staff Scientist at Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory in Berkeley, founded AM+A, and began research as a Co-Principle Investigator of a research project funded by the US Department of Defense's Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). In 1992, he received the National Computer Graphics Association's annual award for contributions to the industry. He was the keynote speaker for ACM/SIGGRAPH in 1980, the organizer and chair of the opening plenary panel for ACM/SIGCHI's CHI 1999 conference, and the closing plenary speaker for the Usablity Professionals Association 2005 conference.
