Life and Career[edit]

1989-02: Career beginnings and breathrough[edit]

Lohan began her career as a child model with Ford Models at the age of three.[12][13] She modeled for Calvin Klein Kids and Abercrombie kids, and appeared in over 100 television commercials,[14] including those for Pizza Hut and Wendy's, as well as a Jell-O spot with Bill Cosby.

At the age of 10, Lohan was cast to play Alexandra "Alli" Fowler in the series Another World, Lohan remained in the role for a year, before leaving to star in Disney's 1998 family comedy The Parent Trap, a remake of the 1961 movie. She played dual roles of estranged twins who try to reunite their long-divorced parents, played by Dennis Quaid and Natasha Richardson.[9][12] The film earned $92 million worldwide and earned Lohan a Young Artist Award for best performance in a feature film[15] as well as a three-film contract with Disney.[14] At the age of 14, Lohan played Bette Midler's daughter in the pilot episode of the short-lived series, Bette, but resigned her role when the production moved from New York to Los Angeles.[9][16] She also starred in two Disney television movies: Life-Size opposite Tyra Banks in 2000, and Get a Clue in 2002.[12][13]

2003-06: Success in music and film[edit]

Lohan was cast alongside Jamie Lee Curtis in the 2003 family comedy Freaky Friday. It remains her most commercially successful film, earning $160 million worldwide,[17] as well as positive reviews.[18] In 2004, Lohan starred in Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen the film was a moderate success but recieved generally mixed reviews. Later that year Lohan starred in Mean Girls, written by comedian Tina Fey; her first role independent of the Disney brand. Mean Girls recieved both critical and commercial success; grossing $129 million worldwide, and earned Lohan a Teen's Choice Award for her performance. Lohan, then 17, became the youngest-ever host of the MTV Movie Awards in 2004.[19] Lohan then hosted Saturday Night Live three times between 2004 and 2006, as well as hosting the 2006 World Music Awards.[20]

Lohan began showcasing her singing through her acting.[21] For the Freaky Friday soundtrack, she sang the closing theme, "Ultimate,"[14] as well as recording four songs for the Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen soundtrack. Producer Emilio Estefan, Jr. signed Lohan to a five-album production deal in 2002.[14] Two years later, Lohan signed a recording contract with Casablanca Records, headed by Tommy Mottola.[22] Speak, her debut album, was released in December 2004, peaking at number four on the Billboard 200, selling 261,762 copies in its first week. The album received generally mixed reviews and earned a Platinum certification by early 2005.[23] Lohan's second album, A Little More Personal (Raw), was released in December 2005, debuting at number 20 on the Billboard 200 chart, falling under the top 100 within six weeks.[14] Lohan cowrote six of the twelve songs on the album. The album was certified Gold in early 2006.[24] The music video for the album's first single, "Confessions of a Broken Heart (Daughter to Father)", was directed by Lohan and featured the acting debut of her sister, Ali Lohan.[14] The video was a dramatization of the pain Lohan says her family has suffered at the hands of her father.[25] It was Lohan's first song to chart on the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at number 57.[26]

Lohan returned to Disney in 2005 for Herbie: Fully Loaded, the fifth film in the series with the anthropomorphic car Herbie. Fully Loaded earned $144 million worldwide and received mixed reviews.[27][28] In 2005, Lohan became the first person to have a My Scene celebrity doll released by Mattel. She also voiced herself in the animated direct-to-DVD film My Scene Goes Hollywood, based on the series of dolls.[29]

Lohan's next film, the romantic comedy Just My Luck, opened in May 2006 and, according to Variety, earned Lohan over $7 million.[30] The opening weekend box office takings of $5.7 million "broke lead actress Lindsay Lohan's winning streak" according to Brandon Gray.[31] The film received poor reviews and earned Lohan her first Golden Raspberry nomination for worst actress.[32][33] Following Just My Luck, Lohan focused on more mature Independent film roles. A Prairie Home Companion, alongside Meryl Streep and Lily Tomlin had a limited release in June 2006. She also starred in the Emilio Estevez, drama Bobby released in Novemver 2006. Lohan received favorable comments for her performance, particularly a scene opposite Sharon Stone.[34][35] As part of the Bobby ensemble cast, Lohan was nominated for a Screen Actors Guild Award and won an award for Ensemble Acting at the Hollywood Film Festival where she also won a Breakout Award for her work in 2006.[36][37]

2007-09: Personal struggles and work in fashion[edit]

Mugshoot of Lohan from May 2007 arrest.

Lohan's next appearance was in Chapter 27 as a John Lennon fan who befriends Mark David Chapman (Jared Leto) on the day he murders Lennon. Filming finished in early 2006, but was not screened until 2007, with a limited release in March 2008.[38][39][40]

In early January 2007, Lohan underwent appendix surgery.[41][42][43] Later in the month, Lohan admitted herself to the Wonderland Center rehabilitation facility. Lohan checked out on February 16, 2007 after completing a 30-day stay.[44][45] During the stay she continued shooting the film, returning to the facility at night.[46][47] Shortly thereafter, Lohan withdrew from a film adaptation of Oscar Wilde's A Woman of No Importance, her publicist stating that Lohan needed to "focus on getting better."[48][49] Lohan was replaced in The Edge of Love in April 2007, shortly before filming was to begin, with the director citing "insurance reasons" and Lohan later explaining that she "was going through a really bad time then."[50][51][52]

In May 2007, the film Georgia Rule, in which Lohan stars alongside Felicity Huffman and Jane Fonda, was released. During filming in 2006, Lohan was hospitalized, her representative saying "she was overheated and dehydrated."[53] In a letter that was made public, studio executive James G. Robinson called Lohan "irresponsible and unprofessional." He mentioned "various late arrivals and absences from the set" and that "we are well aware that your ongoing all night heavy partying is the real reason for your so-called 'exhaustion'."[54] Co-star Fonda later commented that "when she showed up on the set, she was always great."[55] Later that year Lohan starred in I Know Who Killed Me, a low-budget thriller-mystery in which she stars as a stripper with a dual personality.[56] The film premiered to what Entertainment Weekly called "an abysmal $3.5 million." and recived extremely negative reviews ."[57] It earned Lohan a dual Razzie nomination for Worst Actress, with Lohan coming first and second, tying with herself.[58]

Lohan was then cast in the film Poor Things.[59] On May 26, four days before production was set to start, she was arrested for DUI and subsequently re-entered rehab. The film's producers initially voiced support and production was put on hold.[60][61][62] Lohan had lost control of her car and run the vehicle up a curb. Beverly Hills police also found what they preliminarily identified as a "usable" amount of cocaine in her car. After receiving treatment for minor injuries, Lohan was arrested on a misdemeanor charge of driving under the influence of alcohol.[63] She subsequently entered the Promises Treatment Center rehabilitation facility, where she stayed for 45 days.[64][65] Upon her release to outpatient care, Lohan was voluntarily fitted with a SCRAM bracelet to monitor her sobriety.[66][67]

On July 24, 2007, three weeks before filming was scheduled to resume on Poor Things, Lohan was arrested for a second DUI and again returned to rehabilitation.[68] Lohan refused a field sobriety test in Santa Monica and was taken to a police station where her blood alcohol level was found to be above the legal limit. While conducting a search, the police found a small amount of cocaine in her pocket.[66][67][69] Lohan was booked on a felony charge of possession of cocaine and misdemeanor charges of driving under the influence and driving with a suspended license.[69][70] In August 2007, Lohan entered Cirque Lodge Treatment Center in Sundance, Utah for a third stint at rehabilitation, staying until discharge on October 5, 2007.[71] Ultimately, The Hollywood Reporter said, she "fell out of" the Poor Things production.[72]

Lohan pleaded guilty to misdemeanor cocaine use and driving under the influence and was sentenced to one day imprisonment and 10 days of community service. She was also ordered to pay fines and complete an alcohol education program, and was given three years probation. Lohan released a statement in which she said "it is clear to me that my life has become completely unmanageable because I am addicted to alcohol and drugs."[73] On November 15, 2007, Lohan served 84 minutes in jail. A sheriff spokesman cited overcrowding and the nonviolent nature of the crime as reasons for the reduced sentence.[74] The probation was extended by an additional year in October 2009, following several instances in which Lohan failed to attend the court-ordered substance abuse treatment classes.[75]

Following a switch to Universal Motown, Lohan began working on a third album, tentatively titled Spirit in the Dark, in late 2007 and released "Bossy" in May 2008.[76][77][78][79] In November 2008, Lohan stated that work on the new album had stalled and that she wanted to avoid the stress of working on movies and music at the same time.[80] In February 2010, Ne-Yo, with whom Lohan had been collaborating, stated in an interview, "We were doing some stuff and then it just fell off and hasn't got back on. I'm not gonna hold my breath."[81]

In 2008, Lohan launched a clothes line, whose name 6126 was designed to represent Marilyn Monroe's birth date (June 1, 1926). The line started with leggings, before expanding to a full collection, covering 280 pieces as of April 2010.[82] In April 2009 Lohan released a self-tanning spray under the brand name Sevin Nyne in collaboration with Sephora[83]

In May 2008 Lohan appeared on ABC's television series Ugly Betty.[84] She guest starred in four episodes, spanning seasons two and three in 2008, as Kimmie Keegan, an old schoolmate of the protagonist Betty Suarez.[84] Lohan made a cameo appearance in the drug themed music video for the May 2008 N*E*R*D song "Everyone Nose."[85] In the 2009 comedy Labor Pains, Lohan plays a woman who pretends to be pregnant. During the shoot, Lohan's manager worked with the paparazzi to encourage the media to show her working, as opposed to partying.[86] It was originally planned for a theatrical release, but instead appeared as a TV movie on the ABC Family cable channel in July 2009, "a setback for the star" according to Variety.[87][88] The premiere received 2.1 million viewers, "better-than-average" for the channel according to E! Online.[89]

In September 2009, Lohan became an artistic adviser for the French fashion house Emanuel Ungaro;[90] a collection by designer Estrella Archs with Lohan as adviser was presented in October, the collection recieved negative attention.[91] She left the company in March 2010.[92]

2010–11: Legal issues and apperances[edit]

Lohan narrated and presented the British television documentary Lindsay Lohan's Indian Journey about human trafficking in India. It was filmed during a week in India in December 2009 and aired on BBC Three in April 2010.[93][94] The BBC was criticized for hiring Lohan, and while reviewers called the documentary compelling, they also found Lohan's presence to be odd and distracting.[95][96][97] Lohan said: "I hope my presence in India will bring awareness to the really important issues raised in making this film."[98] In April 2010, Lohan was let go from the film The Other Side where she had been set to star, with the director saying she was "not bankable."[99][100][101]

In May 2010, Lohan traveled to the Cannes Film Festival to promote the biographical drama Inferno.[102][103] She was set to star as the lead, adult-film performer Linda Lovelace, but was later replaced while in court mandated rehab.[104][105] Because she was in Cannes, Lohan missed a mandatory DUI progress hearing. A bench warrant was issued for her arrest which was rescinded after she posted bail.[106][107] A judge determined that Lohan had violated the terms of her probation by missing several mandatory classes and meetings. She was sentenced to 90 days in jail followed by 90 days of inpatient rehab treatment.[108][109] Lohan served only 14 days of the jail sentence, due to overcrowding.[110][111][112][113] She then entered an inpatient rehabilitation facility, from where she was released after only 23 days.[112][114][115][116]

In June 2010, Lohan was the subject of a fashion shoot in the photographer docu-series Double Exposure on Bravo.[117] Robert Rodriguez's action exploitation film Machete opened in September 2010. In the film, Lohan's character takes drugs, is naked in much of her appearance and later dons a nun's habit while toting a machine gun. The Washington Post described her character as "a campier, trampier version of herself – or at least her tabloid image".[118] Premiere.com said she was "terrible" while Variety called it "her best work in some time."[119][120] Because of her rehabilitation and legal engagements, Lohan did not participate in promotion of the movie.[121][122][123] Lohan filmed a sketch where she is dressed as Marilyn Monroe for Inappropriate Comedy in 2010. The film had issues finding a distributor and was not released until 2013, when it was met with poor box office and critical reception.[124][125][126] Lohan appeared on the October 2010 cover of Vanity Fair. She told the magazine: "I want my career back" and "I know that I'm a damn good actress".[99][124][127]

In September 2010, Lohan's probation was revoked following a failed drug test.[128][129][130] She spent part of the day in jail before being released on bail.[130][131][132][133] A few days later she entered the Betty Ford Center, a drug and alcohol treatment center, where she remained on court order for three months until early January 2011.[121][134][135][136][137] In February 2011, Lohan was charged with the theft of a necklace reported stolen from a jewelry store the month before.[138][139][140] She was sentenced to community service and 120 days in jail for misdemeanor theft and probation violation, to which she pled no contest.[141][142][143][144][145] Due to jail overcrowding, Lohan served the sentence under house arrest wearing a tracking ankle monitor for 35 days.[146][147][148] In November Lohan was found to have violated the terms of her probation by failing to perform the required community service.[149][150] She was sentenced to additional community service and 30 days in jail, of which she served less than 5 hours due to overcrowding.[151][152][153][154][155]

2012-13: Attempted comeback and continued legal issues[edit]

Lohan appeared in the January/February 2012 issue of Playboy magazine, in a shoot inspired by a nude pictorial of Marilyn Monroe from the first issue of the magazine.[156][157] Editor Hugh Hefner said Lohan's issue was "breaking sales records."[158] Lohan had not appeared on Saturday Night Live since 2006, when she hosted the show for the fourth time in March 2012.[159] Her appearance received mixed to negative reviews. Critics appreciated the self-deprecating references to her personal troubles, but also commented that she largely played a supporting role.[160] The episode had the second highest ratings of the season with 7.4 million viewers.[161][162] In May 2012, Lohan did a brief appearance as a celebrity judge on the television series Glee in the episode "Nationals."[163] Lohan stars as a surfer in the art film First Point by artist Richard Phillips. It debuted at Art Basel in June 2012 and features a score by Thomas Bangalter from Daft Punk. Comments from critics on Lohan's work were mixed.[164][165]

Lohan stars as Elizabeth Taylor in the biographical made-for-television movie Liz & Dick, which premiered on the Lifetime cable channel in November 2012. Reviews of Lohan's performance were largely, but not unanimously, negative. The Hollywood Reporter said she was "woeful" while Variety called her "adequate".[166][167] Entertainment Weekly described the premiere ratings of 3.5 millions as "a little soft".[168] On way to the Liz & Dick set in June 2012, Lohan was in a car accident where she sustained minor injuries and which caused a delay in production.[169][170] During the shoot, paramedics were called to Lohan's hotel room, treating her for exhaustion and dehydration.[171][172][173] In April 2013 the horror comedy Scary Movie 5 was released, where Lohan appears as herself alongside Charlie Sheen in the opening sketch. It was panned by critics, but a few reviewers found Lohan and Sheen to be one of the better parts of the movie.[174][175][176] The same month Lohan guest-starred as herself in an episode of Sheen's comedy series Anger Management.[177] In March 2013, Lohan pled no contest to misdemeanor charges stemming from the June 2012 car accident; reckless driving and providing false information to a police officer. She was sentenced to community service, psychotherapy and lockdown rehabilitation. Her probation was also extended for another two years.[178][179] Between May and July 2013 Lohan spent 90 days in rehabilitation.[180][181]

In August 2013, just days after Lohan left rehab, The Canyons was released, an independent erotic thriller directed by Paul Schrader and written by Bret Easton Ellis.[182][183] It was made on a low budget, most of which was gathered through online fund raiser Kickstarter. Lohan received $100 a day and a share of the profit. She is also credited as co-producer.[173] The New York Times Magazine described Lohan as difficult to work with, and the shoot as fraught with conflict between Lohan and Schrader.[173] Lohan and her co-star, adult-film actor James Deen, portray an actress and a producer in a volatile relationship. Reviews for the film were generally poor, but several critics praised Lohan's performance. The New Yorker said she was "overwrought and unfocused" while Variety called her "very affecting" and Salon described her as "almost incandescent".[184][185][186] The same month Lohan filled in for Chelsea Handler as host of the cable talk show Chelsea Lately. She received mostly positive reviews for her appearance and the show garnered its best ratings of the year.[187][188][189]

2014-present: Television work and stage debut[edit]

The 8 part docu-series Lindsay aired in March and April 2014 on Oprah Winfrey's OWN cable network. The series follows Lohan's life and work as she moves to New York City after leaving rehab. In the final episode, Lohan said she had a miscarriage which interrupted filming of the series.[190] The premiere had 693,000 viewers, described as "so-so" by The Hollywood Reporter.[191] The ratings then slipped and the finale only had 406,000 viewers.[192][193] New York Daily News called the series "surprisingly routine", Variety described it as boring, while Liz Smith said it was "compelling" and "usually painful to watch."[194][195][196] In April 2014 Lohan guest-starred in an episode of the CBS sitcom 2 Broke Girls.[197][198] Lohan made her stage debut in October 2014, starring in the London West End production of David Mamet's Speed-the-Plow, portraying Karen, a role originally played by Madonna. Reviews of Lohan's performance were mixed, with the Associated Press describing critical reception overall as "lukewarm".[199] The Stage said she was "out of her league" while The Times wrote that she "can act a bit" and The Guardian said she "holds the stage with ease".[200][201]

In June 2014 it was reported that Lohan intended to move to London on a permanent basis.[202] In October 2014 Lohan reiterated that she intends to remain in the United Kingdom after her stint in the West End ceases in November.[203]

In July 2014 she filed a lawsuit against Rockstar Games claiming elements in the video game Grand Theft Auto V were influenced by her image, voice and clothing line without permission.[204] Rockstar responded in court papers that sought a dismissal of the case, saying that the case was frivolous and filed for publicity purposes.[205]

Personal life[edit]

Image[edit]

With Mean Girls, Lohan's public profile was raised significantly and paparazzi began following her.[206] She spent several years living out of hotels in Los Angeles, of which two years were spent at Chateau Marmont. In late 2007, after settling down in more permanent residence, she explained that she spent so much time in hotels because she "didn't want to be alone" but that "it wasn't a way of life ... not very consistent."[207][208][209] Lohan has had a series of car accidents that have been widely reported, with minor crashes in August 2004,[210] October 2005,[211] and November 2006, when Lohan suffered minor injuries because a paparazzo who was following her for a photograph hit her car. Police called the crash intentional, but prosecutors said there was not enough evidence to file criminal charges.[212]

During the 2008 US presidential campaign, Lohan offered her services to Barack Obama's election effort, including hosting events aimed at young voters; but her offer was declined. An unnamed source within the Obama campaign told the Chicago Sun-Times that Lohan was "not exactly the kind of high-profile star who would be a positive for us."[213] She nonetheless posted MySpace blogs with her opinions on the election, urging voters to support Obama, criticizing media coverage of vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin, and describing Palin as homophobic, anti-abortion and anti-environmentalist.[214] In the aftermath of the Haiti earthquake, Lohan gave fund-raising assistance to the British Red Cross in March 2010 to provide aid for the country.[215]

Lohan has been the face of Jill Stuart, Miu Miu, Dooney & Bourke, and Fornarina[216] In June 2010, Lohan was the subject of a fashion shoot in the photographer docu-series Double Exposure on Bravo.[217] Lohan appeared on the October 2010 cover of Vanity Fair. She told the magazine: "I want my career back" and "I know that I'm a damn good actress". Talking about her DUI incidents she said "These were my college years ... but they were in the public eye. I was irresponsible. I was experimenting."[218][219][124]

Relationships[edit]

Media attention has focused on her personal life. She dated Aaron Carter in 2002. In May 2004, Lohan began dating That '70s Show actor Wilmer Valderrama. In 2006 she dated Pink Taco restaurant owner Harry Morton, son of former Hard Rock Cafe chain owner Peter Morton. Her relationship with Morton was highly publicized, with speculation that the two were engaged, later that year they seperated. In 2007 Lohan first dated British TV personality Calum Best and then snowboarder Riley Giles, whom she met during rehab. She dated DJ Samantha Ronson on and off between 2008 and 2009. Lohan co-hosted club events with Ronson and accompanied her when she was DJ-ing.[220] Speaking about her sexual orientation, Lohan has said she is not a lesbian. When asked if she is bisexual, she responded "Maybe. Yeah", adding "I don't want to classify myself."[221]
