Article Selection[edit]

Please list the topic(s) that you were assigned based on your stated research preferences. This will include the area(s) you will be writing about for our LGBTQ+ Communication Studies page, at least one peer-reviewed Communication journal article for each topic, and a potential current Wikipedia articles(s) you might link your section to later in the semester.

Option 1: LGBTQ+ Critical Media Studies[edit]

Section Overview

This is for the overall Section of LGBTQ+ Media Studies in total: What should this overall section include?

This section should include a close informational take

What are topics you noticed in your Communication Studies journal article research searches? How have you coordinated with your buddy/buddies to brainstorm this potential section?

I noticed during the journal article research searches that there was a lot of analysis on things such as tv and media, but not as much on literature. Amongst this, a lot of the articles that are more communication focused either place a strong emphasis on things like interpersonal relationships between a canonical or non canonical queer pairing, or they focus on just the representation as a whole, very few articles were really willing to go into depth. I coordinated with my buddy to make sure that there was no overlap on things such as which topic areas we were doing.

Topic Focus

What is one topic of peer-reviewed LGBTQ+ Communication Research that should be in this section?

One topic of peer-reviewed LGBTQ+ Communication Research that should be in this section would be specifically the LGBTQ meida criticism that has happened that has been noteworthy, things like overall increase of media literacy and its beginnings, and how it affects the way people consume LGBT media as a whole because there has to be a balance between criticism and avocating for representation

Why would this topic be important to include based on the peer-reviewed research topic(s) that you noticed in your library searches?

This topic is important to include based on the peer-reviewed research topics noted in my library searches because this topic gives us a gateaway to different types of LGBT media research and critical thinking of the concepts that we are consuming.

Source(s)

What is one (or more) peer-reviewed Communication Studies journal article(s) you could use for this topic, and why did you choose that specific source? Briefly describe the source's focus in your own words (paraphrase; avoiding close paraphrasing).

Be sure to use the cite button above to cite the source too, like this: I would like to include Eger (2018) because.... [1]

I would like to cite Lepp (2022) [2] because there is a really good balance of criticism and advocacy that is being discussed, and this could fall under media literacy. Lepp specifically discusses Love, Simon as a popular representation and goes further into analysis of the film and its other sequels of the movies, tv shows, and books in the same universe.

Potential Current Wikipedia Article(s)

What is one (or more) potential current live Wikipedia Article(s) you may later be able to link to refer readers to after you complete your writing?

I would link to the LGBT page, the LGBT Media page and possibly some of the more influential movies or some of the lists in things like transgender characters in fim or media literacy.

Option 2: LGBTQ+ Representation in Film and TV[edit]

Section Overview

See Option 1: Already completed

Topic Focus

LGBT representation in film and TV, specifically newer representations

Source(s)

In focusing on patient provider communication....summary of the article in MY OWN WORDS.[3] Linking to Wiki page Health Communication

Potential Current Wikipedia Article(s)

Option 3: LGBTQ+ Communication and Literature[edit]

Section Overview

See Option 1: Already completed

Topic Focus[edit]

I would like to focus on LGBT literature, specifically literature aimed towards younger people or literature that is more mainstream vs. literature that is less mainstream, so things like Love Simon or Spinning by Tillie Walden, as well as

Source(s)

I would like to use a source on LGBTQ+ slash fiction [4] because when we look at literature now, a lot of the authors who are published in the mainstream are able to be published in the mainstream media and publications are able to do so because of the authors who first wrote and published their works online. This source also touches on LGBT media as a whole which can also be beneficial to those looking to research.

Potential Current Wikipedia Article(s)

Potential wiki articles would be things like the fanfiction wiki, the lgbt literature wiki and the fandom wiki. There could also be a wiki link to specific novels or specific areas of LGBT literature
