Propionibacterium acnes is an aerotolerant anaerobic Gram positive bacteria, rod-shaped genus from actinobacteria phylum , it is a component of the normal bacterial flora of the skin , commensal and part of the skin flora present on most healthy adult humans' skin, and play an important role in pathogenesis of acne .
Mode of action[edit]
After being engulfed and processed by phagocytes, P.acnes induces a strong Th1-type cytokine immune response by producing cytokines such as IL-12, IFN-γ and TNF-α, P.acne binds to TLR2 on monocytes and dendritic cells, leading to activation of the IL-12 promoter , IL-12, TNF-α and IFN-γ are known to be effective antitumor cytokines, P. acnes has been suggested to have antitumor activity.[1]
p.acnes was purified from normal healthy volunteers and cultured in brain-heart infusion medium and injected into dorsal skin of mice at the site where Malignant Melanoma so the tumor size at the end of observation significantly decreased , P.acnes vaccine is a promising candidate as an adjuvant potent therapy and suppressing of Melanoma.
