The Late 19th Century

The latter half of the 19th Century was filled with many influential people. Queen Victoria, Otto von Bismarck, Napoleon III, Abraham Lincoln, and Ulysses S. Grant, were among the ones living in this late century, having a more then modest impact on how the next century of geopolitical standings and relations would shape to be.

Conflicts

The 19th century in general has seen many conflicts. Some that occurred late into the century was the American Civil War, which resulted in the end of slavery in the United States, and the Franco-Prussian War, which saw the surrender and abdication of Emperor Napoleon III of France and the proclamation of the French Third Republic.

Art

During this late century, the painter Vincent van Gough, the composer Ludwig van Beethoven, the impressionist Edgar Degas, and the sculptor Edmonia Lewis, were all late into their lives, having contributed to the art of their time.

Impressionism found its roots in late 19th century Paris as an art movement.
