There is no need to try and remove information. The article Gentlemen's club itself explains that many, if not most, such institutions now admit women. The term has a historical context, and is not understood literally. There is no reason to lose the context. One could add that it now admits women. How about leaving the lead as it is, and changing the first sentence in the History section to "The club was founded in 1797 as a 'gentlemen's club'.", using Ken Pye p70 as the reference for this sentence? And as Ken Pye says in his book, he is a "Proprietor of the Institution"; he uses the term in the book, so that should be OK by everyone (?). --Peter I.
