Inspiration for Joshua Deets of Lonesome Dove?[edit]

Was John Ware the inspiration for Joshua Deets in the TV mini-series Lonesome Dove? My aunt seems to think so, though unless there's a passage in the book that says otherwise he doesn't ever seem to go to Canada in the show.
