Significance[edit]

I have removed the following places:

These could be added back but I think it's important to detail their international significance. Any that we feel are not important enough should be included in List of city name changes or another related article. violet/riga (t) 19:48, 26 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

  • I think all of the significant name changes in India probably deserve a separate article.--Pharos 20:45, 26 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Burmese placename change controversy[edit]

Has anyone thought of writing an article about the controversial place name changes in Burma? - (Aidan Work 03:51, 11 January 2006 (UTC))[reply]

See articles on Explanation of the names of Burma/Myanmar and Yangon. //Big Adamsky 15:59, 11 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

South Korean place name changes[edit]

Has anyone thought of writing an article about the changes in spelling of places in South Korea? For example; Pusan has had its name changed to Busan. That is very controversial in itself, as people know where Pusan is, but not Busan. - (Aidan Work 03:51, 11 January 2006 (UTC))[reply]

naming disputes section needs fixing[edit]

the links are quite random. some refer to real disputes (macedonia, londonderry) and some to non-existent ones (e.g. iran). why not put in the real disputes about indian and burmese names and take out the crap? (btw as an american i'm aware of various low-level disputes concerning the word "american"; this is a big issue in spanish, where terms like "estadounidense" or "norteamericano" are often used)

St Petersburg/Petrograd[edit]

"St Petersburg – originally St Petersburg (in 1703), then Petrograd (in 1914), Leningrad (in 1924) and back to St Petersburg in 1991"

The first two look the wrong way round. I recall being taught that it was called St Petersburg during the reign of Tsar Nicholas II, and Petrograd at some time before that. I know that Petrograd is named after Tsar Peter, but didn't find out if it was called anything before that. So who's right - this or my history teacher? -- Smjg 13:43, 2 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

When was Abyssinia renamed as Ethiopia?[edit]

Hi, I am very happy you made an article concerning renaming as it helps avoiding confusion, but I have trouble finding on Wikipedia when Ethiopia was renamed? The article about Ethiopia doesn't say it. Does anyone know when? Evilbu 17:55, 10 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Danzig is the German exonym of Gdańsk[edit]

We have to get the problem of exonyms and endonyms strictly separated from the problem of renaming. Gdańsk has always been called Gdańsk in Polish, even in Prussian times, and Danzig continues to be the German name of the city, which even Poles nowadays use without any question when they speak German and which was already around even before Gdańsk became Polish. For an English speaker, this might look like a renaming, since the usual English name changed after the city became Polish, but it is not. In fact, Gdańsk and Danzig derive from exactly the same etymon. I have therefore reverted the revert, hoping that the question will be discussed on this talk page instead of reverting without comment. --Daniel Bunčić 08:21, 27 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

it was NOT an exonym when Danzig was part of Germany and 90% of it's inhabitants were German - then it was it's legal and local name - and Gdansk was an exonym - so the official name changed - therefore it is a name change 19:25, 1 July 2018 (UTC)46.223.176.94 (talk) 19:25, 1 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

French Acadia/ Nova Scotia, New Brunswick[edit]

There are many many place names that changed when the English took over the area around Nova Scotia. Pontiff Greg Bard (talk) 04:54, 24 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Topeka, Kansas[edit]

While it is true that the "Google, Kansas" thing is there, topeka changed its name once before too. They once changed it to ToPikachu, but it was only for a day I think. I don't have too much time to research, so I won't add it myself, but instead just suggest it on the comments page. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 98.26.100.247 (talk) 00:19, 13 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Servia/Serbia 'disputed' flag replaced with citation needed;[edit]

I have replaced the Servia/Serbia 'disputed' flag with a 'citation needed' request; the 'disputed' flag produced text stating there were problems in the entire article, with details supposedly given in a Talk section, which turned out not to exist.Tlhslobus (talk) 08:56, 12 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

New Zealand/Aotearoa dispute flagged with citation needed[edit]

I've flagged the alleged New Zealand/Aotearoa dispute with a citation needed request. Neither of the two articles give any clear indication that any dispute exists. Instead they indicate that these are the names of the country in English and Maori, two of the country's official languages, although there is some scholarly discussion as to whether Aotearoa should properly refer only to the North Island of New Zealand. Quite likely the entry should be deleted, though I'd prefer to leave that to somebody who knows a lot more about it than I do. Tlhslobus (talk) 08:55, 12 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

French Guiana[edit]

"French Guiana → Amazonia (2020)" Considering that 1) it is not yet 2020 and 2) I can't seem to find any confirmation of this, I have to ask if this is vandalism or is there really a name change in the works? --Khajidha (talk) 19:35, 11 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

As no one has confirmed this in over a month, I have removed it. Please provide proof if you wish to readd it. --Khajidha (talk) 02:15, 30 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
