Charlotte Bronte[edit]

The future authoress was the family's Governess in the late 1830s, which was disparaged by her family, as it was a working-class position. When the Benson children entered proper education, her services came to an end, and it was decided that she and Emily should set up a School, for which they needed knowledge of the French language. Strings were pulled and she joined Zoe Parent's Boarding School for Young Ladies in Brussels, both to teach English and study French. This period is covered in her novels The Professor and Villette. Charlotte, it turned out, wasn't just studying French. At the end of the year, Emily returned, but Charlotte, entwined with Mme Zoe's husband Constantin Heger, was studying the ways of the female heart, until Zoe caught them and Charlotte was also on her way! In fact, The Turn of the Screw reached Edward from Charlotte, and from there went to Henry James. He paired it with Covering End, in The Two Loves, depicting dark obsession and white innocence, respectively. The dark side certainly came from the wider intellectual community in Brussels, exiled from France. 51.183.175.111 (talk) 06:37, 5 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
