Does a wiki on a country's scuba dive sites meet Wikipedia guidleines?[edit]

Hi, I am new to this and am attempting to describe all the scuba diving sites in Timor-Leste. My aims are to educate and inform, leading to safer and more rewarding diving; global reach that benefits this developing country through tourism; and collaboration - a place where any diver can improve the information. Unfortunately, most dive blogs and webs are closed or barely open to collaboration. Note that this is NOT a commercial plug for anyone; it is just information about the dive sites.

I know my wiki is not sourced from "authoritative" sources, other than the fact I am a PADI Dive Master who has done about 200 dives in Timor-Leste over six years, with a wide group of other divers.

Citations Needed[edit]

Not sure why "Citations Needed" was added to very coordinate given in this article. They are taken from the lat/long provided by Wikimpaia, for places that are definitively and accuratly known.

Why is a citation needed? The article has been developed based on the best references available: The personal, local knowledge of experienced practitioners, including dive professionals with over 200 dives in Timor-Leste (that's me), rather than someone else's book of web-page!! --Ahalin (talk) 02:52, 9 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Sory, I don't understand: Does "no original research" mean you can't use it or none was done? --Ahalin (talk) 01:54, 10 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
"No original research" means just that: we cannot rely on original research conducted by contributors to Wikipedia. Instead, we require that pretty much all statements (other than the obvious "the earth is not flat" type) are verifiable with reference to reliable sources. A reliable source is almost without exception a secondary source rather than a first-hand one etc. You can click on those blue links to see the detail.

Alas, I will be removing all those Wikimapia citations. Wikimapia is an "open wiki" (anyone can edit it) and this is not generally permitted per WP:USERG. I realise that you may have considerable knowledge of the area but just about anyone can suddenly move location X from co-ordinates Y to co-ordinates Z eihher here, at Wikimapia or at both. As I've just said in an edit summary, a place in Russia can find itself redefined at being somewhere in the Pacific.

I have also asked RexxS, who has an interest in diving, whether they would be prepared to take a look at this article. I really do not want to discourage you but, for example, we are not a travel guide and I think that there is much work to be done here. Having said which, RexxS is a really nice person and has oodles of experience: if they decide that they have time to assist then I think that you would gain massively from the collaborative experience. Your interest and your background knowledge would most definitely be appreciated in Wikiproject as a whole & so I hope that you'll stick around. - Sitush (talk) 23:47, 10 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

There is a possibility that Wikitravel and Wikivoyage may come on board as a meta:Travel Guide sister project. I have been editing on Wikitravel for years producing dive site guides similar to this one (which is quite good as dive guides go) At the travel guide wikis are not constrained by No Original Research, they are a better home for this kind of article. I suggest that we cut Ahalin some slack on the GPS positions etc until after Wikimania, when the decision about the travel guide project may be decided, as this article, OR and all, will certainly fit in with the proposed project. Otherwise Ahalin can wait that short time before continuing to add challengeable information. Contact me on my user page for more information if necessary. This would go great there. And hopefully we could convince people to create these sorts of articles for other places in the world. Doc James (talk · contribs · email) (if I write on your talk page please reply on mine) 17:16, 26 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Site is coming soon and we can move this there as soon as it is ready. Doc James (talk · contribs · email) (if I write on your page reply on mine) 07:23, 12 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
