Scope of article[edit]

This article is being repeatedly reverted by User:Itwasagoodyear. The user is trying to keep the article free of information on the artist's political acts, which are sourced and notable. Wikipedia is a not a place for carefully groomed biographies; one cannot expect reliable information to be excluded simply because it might be distasteful to the subject of the author or his biographers. Please do not remove this information without stating defensible justification. Avram (talk) 17:10, 22 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

That user started the article and this edit suggests that he may be Burragubba himself. There may be a conflict of interest here. Of course you are correct that the political activity should be mentioned. --Bduke (Discussion) 22:22, 22 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Full name[edit]

I have re-added the surname McAvoy, sourced from the ABC news story, and added brackets around Burragubba to highlight this as the name by which the article subject identifies himself (similar to someone being William (Bill) Smith).

We don't appear to have a naming convention for indigenous Australian names. Some articles include a traditional name with the European version in brackets (eg. Lowitja O'Donoghue), others use a customary name with the traditional name following i plain type (eg. Ernie Dingo). It's hard to determine in this case because Burragubba is extensively quoted as Mr McAvoy in the article but goes only by Burragubba in the school reference.

Any alternative views on the use of the surname are welcome. Also any views on whether we need an indigenous naming convention to standardise this across articles. Euryalus (talk) 22:17, 22 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

NAME[edit]

For your information: The name "McAvoy" was given to my grandfather by the station owner who "owned his father". This is NOT my European name, as I am NOT European. This name has been legally changed and has not been used since 2004. Also the hunger strike was not for stolen wages, but for the recognition of Aboriginal culture in Brisbane. If you would like to discuss me, please email me and get the truth. adrian@burragubba.com . Burragubba Itwasagoodyear (talk) 03:05, 23 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the response. My apologies if the use of McAvoy is offensive - it was used in the reliable source linked from the article. Biographical articles should generally use the name the article subject identifies as, unless another name is more commonly used. On the basis of your post above, "Adrian Burragubba" would meet both criteria.
Your most recent change to the article is fine by me, but as others have pointed out editors are strongly discouraged from creating or editing articles about themselves, as there is at least a perception of a conflict of interest. To avoid COI accusations some editors prefer to post material on the article talk page for others to assess and add to the article (example. But its up to you - there's is no absolute prohibition on editing your own article provided it is well-sourced and otherwise follows the editing guidelines. Thanks for that Euryalus. I do not personally edit any details, it is up to my manager, as I do not read and cannot use the internet to this extent. I do appreciate your respect. 121.208.193.84 (talk) 05:13, 23 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Mention in Australian Journal of Human Rights 2005 (and Courier Mail)[edit]

I found the following mention but but no US reports. Paul foord (talk) 12:17, 23 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

In Brisbane’s Queen Street Mall, a busking permit granted to an indigenous busker named Burragubba McAvoy was revoked after he sang traditional songs that were held not to be covered by his busker’s licence. After a sit-in by the busker, the permit was reinstated (Heywood 2004). K.
