"Class 800" designation[edit]

I'm not sure when it is proposed to complete the merger of this page into the Class 800 page, but I do think we should hold off until there is further official confirmation from EMR. There is some ongoing discussion on RailUK forums as to whether the spokesman was mistaken. For example, a possible explanation states that the said spokesperson might have been told their Hitachi units are "800-series trains" and come to the conclusion that this means Class 800.

Furthermore, the EMR units are very different to the AT300s that came before them. The Class 802s are far closer in specification to the Class 800s, and yet received a separate class. My recommendation would be to wait for another source before proceeding, in case this turns out to be a mistake on behalf of EMR/Railway Herald. DAB (talk) 10:46, 26 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

If it helps, having seen the email that was sent to Railway Herald from a media spokesperson at EMR, it says "Class 800s (they won't be known as 804s by the way) come into service in 2022." User:RailJournalist 14:43, 28 January 2020

If confirmed, merge & redirect, rather than delete[edit]

If the class 800 designation for EMR is confirmed, which seems unlikely given the differences, then it would be a merge & redirect (retaining the history), rather than a simple delete, so I will remove the PROD. --David Biddulph (talk) 12:11, 26 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Since been confirmed by Hitachi themselves that they will not be 800s (or 804s!) so merger unnecessary. See here. I will move the page to Class 810 to accomodate the latest update, retaining the redirect from 804 for historical purposes (can remain that way unless 804 is ever reused). What the 810s will replace[edit]

The HSTs will be withdrawn by 31 December 2020, the 810s aren't due until 2022 so the the HSTs will be long gone before the first 810 arrives. The HSTs will be replaced by 222s that will be come available when the 360s take over the Corby services. Kalabkyng (talk) 08:55, 19 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Just to clarify the EMR InterCity fleet:

  • as at May 2020 it comprises 72 HST carriages and 143 Class 222 carriages, a total of 215
  • by January 2021 it will compromise 20 Class 180, 84 Class 360 and 143 Class 222 carriages, a total of 231
  • By December 2022 when all the 810s have been delivered, it will comprise 84 Class 360 and 165 Class 810 carriages, a total of 249

So the 165 Class 810 carriages will be replacing 163 Class 180 and Class 222 carriages, the last HSTs will have been withdrawn more than 12 months before the first Class 810 enters service in April 2022, thus the 810s are not HST replacements. Meirtout (talk) 05:03, 26 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Designation speculation[edit]

The suggestion that the class would be designated anything other than the 810 class was nothing but speculation, it was never announced. If EMR had announced they would be designated as 804s, then changed its mind, it would be appropriate to include, but wasn't the case so should be omitted. The Railway Herald article even acknowledges it was based on a rumour stating:

Rumours suggesting that the fleet would receive a previously unused class identity, potentially Class 804....

Just because something is reported in what can be considered to be a reliable source, is not reason enough to include if it turns out to be incorrect. On plenty of occasions newspapers have reported person X will be appointed as the manager at a football club, only for person Y to be appointed. Hence the relevant Wikipedia article only records the announcement of person Y and ignores the incorrect reporting about person X.

Worth noting that while a number of other publications reported the class 810 designation after it became known, none of these ran the class 804 story in late 2019, adding weight to the fact that it was based on speculation with no foundation. When will they come into service on the mml[edit]
