I get that it is an austrian electric locomotive, but what propels it?[edit]

Is this ÖBB 1042 locomotive based on rectification with mercury tubes / silicon diodes or it is simply connected to the low-frequeny overhead wire via a transformer and propelled by universally connected DC-like motors (which incurs high maintenance costs due to frequent commutator arcing)?

(By the way, from 1963 the franco-german industrial conglomerate was supplying 3000hp silicon diode "V43 series" e-loks for the neighbouring Hungary's 25kV/50Hz electrified rail network.) 82.131.145.229 (talk) 08:40, 21 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
