Considering the statue was erected in 1876, "recently" would be more appropriate than "long." Worse, the quote doesn't even mention controversy; just factual political origins and one person's appraisal. This section was added/revised June 2020, suggesting it's in response to current news of efforts to take down the statue. Ideally this section would be rewritten and re-sourced altogether to make clear the alleged controversy.
