- 1768 – Taksin the Great was crowned king of the newly established Thonburi Kingdom in the new capital at Thonburi, present-day Thailand.
- 1832 – John C. Calhoun became the first Vice President of the United States to resign.
- 1879 – The Tay Rail Bridge, spanning the Firth of Tay in Scotland between Dundee and the Wormit, collapsed during a violent storm while a train was passing over it, killing all on board.
- 1907 – The last confirmed sighting of the now-extinct huia took place in the Tararua Ranges, North Island, New Zealand.
- 1908 – A magnitude 7.2 earthquake and subsequent tsunami struck Messina, Italy, killing more than 100,000 people.
- 1912 – The San Francisco Municipal Railway, operator of the city's famed cable car system, opened its first line.
- 1918 – Irishwoman Constance Markievicz became the first female Member of Parliament elected to the British House of Commons, although she never served.
- 1935 – Politician Pavel Postyshev revived the New Year tree tradition in the Soviet Union when Pravda published his letter asking for them to be installed in schools, children's homes, Young Pioneer Palaces, children's clubs, children's theaters, and cinema theaters.
- 1973 – U.S. President Richard Nixon signed the Endangered Species Act into law, a wide-ranging environmental law designed to protect critically imperiled species from extinction.
- 1989 – In one of Australia's most serious natural disasters, a 5.6 ML earthquake struck Newcastle, New South Wales, killing 13 people and injuring more than 160 others, and causing an estimated A$4 billion in damages.
- 2006 – Somali Civil War: Troops of Somalia's Transitional Federal Government along with their Ethiopian allies captured Mogadishu unopposed.
- 2009 – A suicide bomber attacked a Shi'ite commemoration in Karachi, Pakistan, during a procession on the Day of Ashura, the holiest of days for followers of Shia Islam.
- 2011 – Acting on information that PKK militants were crossing the border into Şırnak Province, two Turkish F-16 jets fired at a group of villagers, killing 34 people.

- 1943 – World War II: After eight days of brutal house-to-house fighting, the 1st Canadian Infantry Division captured Ortona, Italy.
- 2014 – The passenger ferry MS Norman Atlantic caught fire in the Adriatic Sea, resulting in nine deaths, with a further 19 missing.
