The New pages patrol is a voluntary association of Wikipedians who keep their eyes on Special:Newpages and (do things)

What to look for, and how to help

  • Newbie tests, which often take of form of typing exercises ("adsfjklasdfjkl" curious questions ("wow, what is this?") or miscellaneous irrelvant comments ("ed gruberman is gay"). These can have the message {{msg:delete}} safely placed in them so that they can be deleted by an administrator. You might also want to consider placing {{msg:test}} on the creator's user page to help point them in the right direction.
  • Vanity pages; these should be listed on Wikipedia: Votes for deletion
  • Stubs which are the beginnings of meaningful and encyclopedic articles, but which need a little help (a little wikifying, as it were)
  • Copyright violations...
  • Orphan articles...
  • Other cases....

Suggestions for patrol members

  • Wikipedia:Don't bite the newbies. If you see a new user or IP address contributing, welcome them if you're so inclined, and include a pointer or two or feedback about how they can make their contributions even better. Most will gladly welcome the support.
  • Try not to step on people's toes. Many times, users will start an article as the briefest of stubs, and then expand it over the succeeding hours or days.
  • Please be familiar with the speedy deletion policy.
  • More suggestions.

How to join

The new pages patrol is entirely voluntary; we'd ask that you commit to one hour chunks of time (as many or as few as you like), and record the times on the listing below. Don't feel like you need to sign up in advance; if you suddenly feel like monitoring new pages for a while right now, put yourself down and get to work. Likewise, if you want to committ to 7-8pm every day, please do, but please also try to stick to the times your commit to and remove yourself if you decide not to. Again, feel no obligations. The list is mainly for tracking purposes to see that every hour gets covered.

Likewise, more than one person can adopt an hour to monitor new pages (the more, the merrier. ;). But we'd prefer that untaken hours be filled first, if possible.
