Page move query - "Seeman" to "Senthamizhan Seeman"
I am not taking administrative action against either user. That is what WP:ANI is for. My talkpage is not a place for you to argue your differences (single BLP violations or not) and frankly i'm tired of the back and forth. -- Amanda (aka DQ) 13:21, 30 December 2020 (UTC) |

Hi. Can you explain this move [1]? As per some Indian names, the individual is known mononymously. Think Rajinikanth, Vijay, Vikram etc. His major work is in cinema (where he has been credited as nothing other than 'Seeman'), and politics, where again its varied between the unconfirmed names of Senthamizhan and Sebastian. Please note that "Senthamizhan" is literally translated into English from Tamil as "Pure Tamil" (which coincidently is what his party protests for - Tamil nationalism). It is a moniker rather than an actual name. Please note we don't include monikers in titles. Again, we don't say things like 'Superstar Rajinikanth' or 'Makkal Selvan Vijay Sethupathi' despire it being mentioned widely in the media. The article should be reverted to Seeman (politician) Neutral Fan (talk) 16:33, 29 December 2020 (UTC)
AmandaNP - by the ongoing discussion on the page, I think the page should return to Seeman (politician) until further notice. Not sure how familiar you are with Indian politics, but it is very clear from Suneye1's edits that he is also trying to take part in Seeman's cover-up act of being originally called "Senthamizhan" (English: Pure Tamil Man) [which corresponds to his party's pro-Tamil nationalist policies]. Suneye1 has introduced propaganda-based sources from the party website to back up unverified claims [16] and [17], removed sourced information which may 'give away' Seeman's real identity with invalid reasons [18], and his early edit history suggests he has a general bias towards anti-Hindu policies. I would go as far as suggesting a topic ban. Neutral Fan (talk) 11:36, 30 December 2020 (UTC)

Found the disruptive sock
Hello Amanda and I hope you're doing well. I just want to say do you remember recently banning this sock user with multiple accounts? [20] Well he's back now damaging the same articles as before. He threatened he would change the Bale Sultanate article [21] and he did with his new account named Silverhorn68. [22] and if you look closely at the view history you'll see another new account named Hayaa20. It's the same user because he has two numbers in the end and focuses on Oromo history and vandalizes pages like on here. [23]
He also restored Fetegar which was deleted after he was found for being a sock puppet. [24] Wej was never a kingdom but a group of people and he made an article titled Wej province then he proceeds to mention it as a kingdom. [25] He denies Oromo expansion and goes into every article with original research with "however" without placing a source. [26] This user is very disruptive and all his false articles should be deleted and I'm sure he has more than two accounts currently that deserve to be banned. I would really appreciate it if you could look into it again since you've dealt with this user in the past and did an absolutely amazing job. Ayaltimo (talk) 15:30, 31 December 2020 (UTC)
- I have blocked the first user as them. I don't thing you have presented enough evidence at this time (because most of it is history links instead of diffs) for me to run a check on Hayaa20 with such a low edit count. If you wish to pursue this further, I would request you do it through SPI instead of my talkpage. This allows people to attend to it faster than I may be able to (and relieves my obligation to chase down the evidence in a timely manner) and get more eyes to see what I may not see. -- Amanda (aka DQ) 18:58, 31 December 2020 (UTC)
- AmandaNP Thank you so much for blocking this troll. As for the user Hayaa20 he's editing through a mobile web the same way as Silverhorn68 did so I think running a checkuser on them would be suitable since you managed to link several accounts through his IP. Here's another suspected new sock named Driver2152. It has a random name and numbers in the end and uses mobile web when editing. [27] not only has he edited an article created by Silverhorn68 but he edited an Ethiopian ruler page [28] the same thing Silverhorn68 did [29] but if that is not enough then sure I will do what you said instead. I would like to request one thing. Can you please delete the articles created by the sock puppet (Silverhorn68)? They are Fetegar and Wej province. Thank you so much and happy new year! Ayaltimo (talk) 21:12, 31 December 2020 (UTC)
- Re. the articles Fetegar and Wej province, I can't just delete them. The criteria for deleting that you are referring to is WP:CSD#G5. That clearly states that only articles
that have no substantial edits by others
can be deleted under the criteria. @Elinruby: actually made significant edits to Fetegar and the sum of edits to Wej province likely don't meet the threshold. It's not meant to punish regular contributors who have spent time and energy into writing the article. - As for your claims about Hayaa20, by your logic, if I run a checkuser on them I could essentially run a checkuser on Neils51 who only did grammar edits in the article (and has 38,000 edits). They also could have easily decided to use a mobile device. Having numbers on the end of your username and editing the same article using mobile edits does not provide evidence that it's more likely that it is the same person than two different people. That is the bar required for the use of CheckUser. It is not something I can use when I wish. Beyond that, I already checked the relevant IP address from when I just blocked Silverhorn68. If there were other users, I would have blocked them too, but it's the only other account that came up. That means they will not be on the same IP. They will be on a new one which would require even more evidence to block then. So at this point i'm going to officially Check declined by a checkuser it.
- By that same point that I have already checked the IPs with Silverhorn68, I again would have seen Driver2152. Therefore editing the same articles using mobile edits is not enough to meet the evidence level required for a checkuser at WP:SPI. This does not change simply because we are on my talkpage. You have also commented now that you may take the same evidence for someone else to review to SPI. I have issue with that because I have now had to look into it further despite my request to take it there. Therefore I will now go and file the SPI on your behalf and make my comments there (now filled Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Shit233333334). This keeps it on the same page so that we know Silverhorn68 was a sock and we can use that to compare in the future, whereas on my talkpage, it simply just gets lost in my archive. -- Amanda (aka DQ) 22:14, 31 December 2020 (UTC)

- I know nothing about anybody being a sock. A series of pages about former Ethiopian peoples or kingdoms showed up in the uncategorized queue and that is what I know, period. I did what I could for them and as far as I can tell from 10000 feet, the information is accurate. I did not check every single assertion however, so I can't say I know them to be error-free, but blurring between a people and a kingdom is quite common for articles about the period. Bottom line, i think that if there is some question about them, they should be reviewed by a topic expert. Elinruby (talk) 20:29, 2 January 2021 (UTC)

Komala sockpuppets
Hi AmandaNP! I'm writing directly to you since I see you protected the Komala Party of Iranian Kurdistan page. I'm not sure if SPI is the best venue for this, but Keywan faramarzi is evading a block with a new account Keywankomala. The new account just created what appears to be an autobiography at Kayvan Faramarzi. Thank you and happy new year! --MarioGom (talk) 17:38, 1 January 2021 (UTC)
IP block
hello Amanda I'm hoping you can help me with something. I recently switched my cell provider and upgraded to a new phone, only to discover the ip address associated with it is blocked, and it says you authorized the block. I can also see edits that I didn't make. It looks like the account I use for edits (this one) is unaffected but I am afraid of being falsely accused of sockpuppetry and losing that account. The ban is unappealable and expires in March. Let me know what I should do and if you need any additional information from me. Thanks! Anon0098 (talk) 00:34, 3 January 2021 (UTC)

Got two weeks permission while was away
Hello, Amanda! On December 17th, 2020, you have granted me two weeks permission to review pending changes, see https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?oldid=995354648#User:Maxim_Masiutin
That term has expired on December 31st, 2020, i.e. three days ago.
While, unfortunately, I was away from Wikipedia since December 6th, only manage to make a very small edit https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=MEDLINE&oldid=993965067 on December 13th, however, this was just a regular edit, not related to the reviewable pending changes list, as obvious.
Now I'm back and can review pending changes. Could you please reinstate my review pending changes reviewer's permissions, preferably for a longer period, say, two months?
Thank you in advance! Maxim Masiutin (talk) 11:50, 3 January 2021 (UTC)
- I definitely understand your situation. I have reinstated it for 1 month. That being said, I don't feel comfortable with the two months. The initial short timeframe is to sort out any issues that may arise early on and is why I give the trials to begin with. If you are two months into using it and we don't notice the issues till then, it is harder to fix at that point. I do understand 2 weeks can be short though, so that's how I settled on the month. -- Amanda (aka DQ) 19:13, 3 January 2021 (UTC)

Hello A and happy new year. You blocked 197.83.246.141 (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log) last month. It looks like they have returned to editing as 197.89.10.25 (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log). There is also a thread about them here Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Edit warring#User:197.89.10.25 reported by User:Beyond My Ken (Result: ). This is mostly a heads up in case any other editor asks about the original block. Best regards. MarnetteD|Talk 18:34, 3 January 2021 (UTC)

An IP editor was blocked for evasion of one of your rangeblocks
Hi AmandaNP. Please see this closure of a dispute about the Baby Esther article. The IP in question seemed to be evading a one-year block that you previously placed, marked as a checkuserblock-wide. I'm letting you know because I don't know the background. Though the 3-month block of the new IP will presumably suffice for the moment. Thanks, EdJohnston (talk) 21:08, 3 January 2021 (UTC)
- Hi Ed. I took a look at this in the above section and i dont think its mt target. Thanks for the FYI. -- Amanda - mobile (aka DQ) 21:11, 3 January 2021 (UTC)
- Hm, yes the above section does seem to raise the same question. So if the newly blocked IP 197.89.10.25 (talk · contribs) were to ask for unblock (and not swear at admins while doing so) we should entertain it. If your target is a named sock, are you able to tell me privately, or at the CU wiki? EdJohnston (talk) 22:42, 3 January 2021 (UTC)

- I know of no policy that requires removal of items from a list solely because they don't have an article, in fact they can be included with a citation. I'm not going to mass remove them and potentially run afoul of the bot/semi-automated editing policy. Also not sure what you mean by the redlink. -- Amanda (aka DQ) 22:48, 6 January 2021 (UTC)
- Sorry, meant to link List of films: numbers and for some reason didn't think to preview my edit. I'm basing this on the list's own guidelines (which have been in place for a while now) rather than on sitewide policy. Admittedly, this does make reformatting entries a bit tedious in some cases, but I'll take care of those. Ionmars10 (talk) 22:58, 6 January 2021 (UTC)

2021 London mayoral election
Hi. You recently fully protected 2021 London mayoral election. I had asked for semi-protection. The edit-warring came from what appeared to be one IP editor editing against consensus, as per Talk and three different editors reverting the IP editor. Feedback on my Pending Changes Reviewer's activity
Could you please provide feedback on my Pending Changes Reviewer's activity? I'm reverting some an accepting some edits. However, in my "Contributions" log I only see reverted edits. You have assigned me the status until 3 February 2021. Will you prolong the status? Thank you! Maxim Masiutin (talk) 11:16, 26 January 2021 (UTC)
- @Maxim Masiutin: I was just able to sit down and review this. I think you need to take a step back and rereview the criteria to decline as i'm seeing several large errors. As a PCR, you are not a content police on what can and can't be included. You can change things without accepting the revision or declining it and then it will be automatically accepted. But you can't revert a pending edit just because it doesn't align with all content policies. Please see the general criteria and the acceptable edits section. In fact, some of the changes you reverted could have been changed with simple fixes. I will review your PCR on a probationary basis for a week so that someone at WP:PERM/PCR can review your next round to make sure it follows with the criteria. -- Amanda (aka DQ) 08:25, 1 February 2021 (UTC)

I can't understand why this was closed as No Consensus. While AFD is not a vote there were 13 Deletes as compared to 7 Keeps. Mztourist (talk) 13:12, 6 February 2021 (UTC)
- By actual head count, my view is 12 delete to 7.5 keep, or about a 61% vote to delete. Numerically, that doesn't hit consensus for me. Beyond that, AfD is a discussion of relevant policies, and not just an opinion count. The comments about WP:SOLDIER in the delete camp were not given as strong a weight because it's not inside policy, it's the opinion of MILHIST. I also can't evaluate the sources directly and supervote, so I have to take peoples comments at face value. There was enough of a dispute about what the current coverage was, that that didn't force consensus either. So my next option was to relist. I did not go for this option as it has already been done once with no significant change in the outcome, and I doubted that more discussion, or at least not making a fresh discussion, would have helped. -- Amanda (aka DQ) 14:07, 6 February 2021 (UTC)
- Thanks for your explanation. I don't see where you get 7.5 Keep and assume that you are counting the two Weak Deletes as 0.5 each? Ignoring SOLDIER, concerns over sourcing were raised by many of the Delete !votes, while many of the Keep !votes acknowledged the thin sourcing. Several Keeps gave no policy-based arguments at all "for the reasons of those who want this article kept" and " WP:SOLDIER is an essay and so has "no official status, and do not speak for the Wikipedia community". Tell it to the Marines." and one User !voted twice. I completely understand your NC close of Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Kristoffer Domeij because of the clear split in views, but I don't see that for Harris. Mztourist (talk) 07:19, 7 February 2021 (UTC)
- Fair enough that @Davidgoodheart: voted twice, that still leaves 7 keeps. Either way, people don't have to link policy to invoke policy, and talking about sourcing is invoking WP:V. Either way, I never go down to superpromoting certain votes and arguing each votes strength post-close, because it turns into an absolute mess. I'll have to direct you to WP:DRV if you disagree with my close at this point, and I'd be absolutely fine having it discussed there. -- Amanda (aka DQ) 16:11, 7 February 2021 (UTC)

Global watchlist - Update 8
Updates associated with DannyS712's Global watchlist script and the Global watchlist extension:
As I noted in the last issue, I received a grant from the WMF to develop the global watchlist script into an extension. That extension has now been deployed on Meta. Visit m:Special:GlobalWatchlistSettings to get started.
I do not plan on any further developments being made to the user script. I have released version 9.1.0 to both the dev and stable versions, which includes a notification about the extension being available when you use the user script. You can dismiss the notification, and the script still works, but it will no longer be maintained.
Those interested in providing feedback for the extension should use the phabricator board, phabricator:tag/mediawiki-extensions-globalwatchlist. Any bug reports about the extension should be filed there.
This will likely be the last update sent to this list.

UTRS 40856
Hey,
Could you please take a quick look at this UTRS appeal? This is an IP address that is being used by the blocked user User: Patrick L. Stephen. He started trolling UTRS with all his blocked accounts so I banned them from UTRS as I found them. He's now started with his IP addresses now. I've banned the IP address that issued this appeal for 1 month but I get the feeling he'll be back with more. I'm not aware of any other IP addresses that he's used, is there anything further I can do?-- 5 albert square (talk) 23:02, 26 February 2021 (UTC)

- A request for comment is open that proposes a process for the community to revoke administrative permissions. This follows a 2019 RfC in favor of creating one such a policy.
- A request for comment is in progress to remove F7 (invalid fair-use claim) subcriterion a, which covers immediate deletion of non-free media with invalid fair-use tags.
- A request for comment seeks to grant page movers the

- When blocking an IPv6 address with Twinkle, there is now a checkbox with the option to just block the /64 range. When doing so, you can still leave a block template on the initial, single IP address' talkpage.
- When protecting a page with Twinkle, you can now add a note if doing so was in response to a request at WP:RfPP, and even link to the specific revision.

Best practice for granting IPBE?
A user has asked me to extend his IPBE for another six months. They mention wanting to continue using VPN, which I know can be questioned. The person has been around since 2003 and makes his identity known on his user page. I haven't granted any IPBEs since becoming a checkuser, and would welcome any advice or pointers on how to make this decision. Thanks, EdJohnston (talk) 17:00, 24 March 2021 (UTC)
- Update: This was VRTS ticket # 202009201007053 from October, 2020 and there's a few more details there about his VPN and the specific rangeblock. EdJohnston (talk) 17:57, 24 March 2021 (UTC)
- Originally, without looking at their userpage, I would have directed this to be a flat decline without some semblance of realistic concern about surveillance (not just "I prefer privacy"). But given their work history, I could see how there may be concerns about monitoring being done. I'm purposely keeping this brief per WP:BEANS, but I would be willing to grant this extension despite that I would normally ask for a tad more detail. If you wish, you can drop me an email and I can explain further. -- Amanda (aka DQ) 02:07, 25 March 2021 (UTC)

Blocked user gets unblocked and promotes genocide denialism on Turkish Wikipedia
Tarik298 a user whom you blocked earlier has been unblocked by Vito Genovese, an administrator in Turkish Wikiepdia. And now this user tries to add the title Armenian Deportation to the article Ermeni Kırımı (Armenian Genocide) and continues to advocate denialism by trying to move the Armenian Genocide page and saying that "Armenian Genocide is defended by Armenian lobby" when I wrote Genocide's existence is proven in international academy. Non-free files with orphaned versions - Vietnamese Wikipedia
Hi! I 'm here because you operate User:DeltaQuadBot that is fixing files in Category:Non-free files with orphaned versions more than 7 days old.
Vietnamese Wikipedia have +5k files with old revisions and I would like to hear if it was possible to use your bot to do a one time run to fix the files?
If yes/maybe we can discuss what to do to make it happen. --MGA73 (talk) 17:57, 18 April 2021 (UTC)
- While it's possible, it would likely need some significant modification to meet what the Vietnamese wiki would need. I will be honest, I don't have much time to go diving through that code at this time. That said, if you can get them all into one category, then I could more easily deal with it. Also I would likely need bot/admin privileges on your local wiki, so you may wish to have that community discussion first. -- Amanda (aka DQ) 12:54, 11 May 2021 (UTC)
- Thank you!
- If both community and you say yes I can either give you a list of file names (like vi:Thành viên:MGA73/Non-FreeOldVersions - it is a bit slow because of the size) or put them in a category. My plan is that it should be as easy as possible for you and it should be a one time run.
- I will go talk to community now! --MGA73 (talk) 16:25, 15 May 2021 (UTC)
- Hi Amanda! Community have discussed on vi:Wikipedia:Thảo_luận#Xóa_phiên_bản_cũ_của_hình_không_tự_do and they like the idea and agree to delete old revisions with a bot and that you of course should have the rights you need to do so. They have "Eliminators" but if that is not enough then "Admin" should be okay too.
- So my question for you is how you would like the files prepared? Would you prefer a list? A category? A special template? --MGA73 (talk) 14:02, 2 June 2021 (UTC)
- Hi Amanda, thanks for your intention to help. For your convenience, I'd like to prepare some content for you to post at vi:Wikipedia:Robot/Yêu cầu cấp quyền:

- Thank you very much Amanda! Yesterday I talked to someone on hr.wiki about mass deleting old versions and someone made a script that might work. Meaning admins should be able to delete/fix up to 500 files per run. If it works admins on vi.wiki can fix it without help from your bot. Can we put this request on hold untill the script have been tested? --MGA73 (talk) 05:25, 12 July 2021 (UTC)

Global watchlist - Update 9
Updates associated with DannyS712's Global watchlist script and the Global watchlist extension:
Hi everyone. As I noted in the last issue, I received a grant last year from the WMF to develop the global watchlist script into an extension. That extension has now been deployed on Meta. Visit m:Special:GlobalWatchlistSettings to get started.
That grant has ended, and I have requested another grant to continue development of the extension, and figured subscribers of the newsletter about the user script might be interested. You can see and comment on the grant request at m:Grants:Project/DannyS712/Continued work on GlobalWatchlist extension - if you support this, I hope you'll consider endorsing the request.

May be time to renew a rangeblock?
Hello Amanda. A single IP from this range was just now blocked for 31 hours per WP:AN#Block for IP, but I see you did a 3-month checkuser block of the /17 back on 24 December 2020"
User:Masti has also done a global block of the single IP. If you recogize the behavior, perhaps it is time for another three to six month block of the /17 range? Thanks, EdJohnston (talk) 21:30, 19 April 2021 (UTC)
Hi, tr:Kullanıcı:Kizilokwave is the user whom you blocked earlier, Tarik298 or Tarik289 (He apparently copied his old user page and also there is proof here that they are the same user[30]). He is thus circumnavigating the block. He also reverted my sourced edits on the Turkish article Armenian Genocide (Ermeni Kırımı). Best regards--Visnelma (talk) 17:19, 25 April 2021 (UTC)

The username blacklist
Hi Amanda, I’ve heard about the username blacklist, but I haven’t been able to find it anywhere. I really need to propose a username component that should go on there. I’m just going to propose it here, since I was redirected to the blacklist from your user page. I propose that we add “I can make my testicles go up and down” because there is a user (or multiple) who have tried making vandalism accounts with that name. That way, every time a user makes an account like that, the bot will report to UAA. Should also probably add in “balls go up and down” because some do it like that. Thanks, 🐍 Helen 🐍 03:20, 14 May 2021 (UTC)

CheckUser query
Hey, NinjaRobotPirate. I've recently been pinged to User:Hockeycatcat's talk page and was shocked to see that he's been blocked. Looking around, it seems the decision was for non-constructive edits and legal threats.
Now, I have no doubts that you are a fantastic admin. But, could you please fill me in on the investigation that has happened prior? Hockeycat was one of the first people I met here when I started actively editing in October, and from keeping in touch with him this seems like something that is completely outside of my circle of expectations of him. Early examples of his kind manner when he helped me on my first GA, Super Mario Bros. 35, are as follows: 1, 2, and our most recent interaction in April, where I gifted him a barnstar for his growing efforts as a Wikipedian.
Recently, my school IP was blocked for a period of a day to persistent vandalism from somebody who edited on school grounds. I was confused and spent the next couple of hours getting in contact with an administrator and they responded to my emails on my talk page (here) and put me on an IP-Block exemption (that user was User:Yamla). I believe Hockeycat had similar issues with this, allegedly blaming IP edits on the apartment he lived in. I believe the main reason my reasonings were believed when I was under an IP block was due to my credibility; for credibility on Hockeycat's side, he's worked on Super Mario Bros. 35 and Pac-Man 99, mainly on prose concerns. In addition, his main contributions are used towards countering vandalism; he's received rollback rights, learned to use Twinkle and Redwarn from User:Ashleyyoursmile, and judging by the slew of bad faith messages he has received in recent times on his talk page he is quite successful with this.
Wanted to mention, I'm in no way affiliated with Hoeckeycat if this is looking suspicious to you. You can check me, but I'm telling the truth in all honesty.
Similar to Hockeycat, I simply want to see the investigation that led up to this. I could probably point out some flaws along the way, hopefully. I originally sent this message to NinjaRobotPirate, but they were only an admin that reviewed the unblocking request and couldn't help me that much. Cabayi also reviewed a second request from Hockeycat and declined due to WP:LITTLEBROTHER. Hope you can help any further! Panini!🥪 11:29, 20 May 2021 (UTC)
- I apologize for the delay in replying here. I'll make it short and sweet for both us. The behavior I talked about in the block log happened on IP addresses with time and useragent overlaps that makes it nearly impossible for it not to have been Hockeycat. This isn't just a shared IP situation. Now I can't disclose those IPs because I could then lose my tools, face an investigation, and potentially be taken to court outside wikipedia. Generally users don't want me disclosing where they live, and that's what an IP address gives you, and what computer/software they use, which is what a useragent gives you. Doing this good-hand, bad-hand logging out is what got the block to be issued. The reason it's a checkuserblock is because of the private data involved. I hope this helps explains. -- Amanda (aka DQ) 13:28, 23 May 2021 (UTC)

- Consensus was reached to deprecate Wikipedia:Editor assistance.
- Following a Request for Comment the Book namespace was deprecated.
- Wikimedia previously used the IRC network Freenode. However, due to changes over who controlled the network with reports of a forceful takeover by several ex-staff members, the Wikimedia IRC Group Contacts decided to move to the new Libera Chat network. It has been reported that Wikimedia related channels on Freenode have been forcibly taken over if they pointed members to Libera. There is a migration guide and Wikimedia discussions about this.
- After a Clarification request, the Arbitration Committee modified Remedy 5 of the Antisemitism in Poland case. This means sourcing expectations are a discretionary sanction instead of being present on all articles. It also details using the talk page or the Reliable Sources Noticeboard to discuss disputed sources.

DeltaQuadBot UAA inactive
Hi Amanda! It looks like DeltaQuadBot hasn't done anything UAA-related in the past four days [31]. Is there a Toolforge grid engine error? DanCherek (talk) 21:02, 17 June 2021 (UTC)
- Thanks. It did error again. I have reset it. -- Amanda (aka DQ) 19:33, 19 June 2021 (UTC)
- Thanks! Unfortunately, still no new username reports from the bot since 13 June, though it did start updating User:AmandaNP/UAA/Time again right after you reset it. DanCherek (talk) 00:27, 24 June 2021 (UTC)
- Very weird. I'll see if I can take a look at it tonight as that's unlikely to be a toolforge thing. -- Amanda (aka DQ) 16:28, 24 June 2021 (UTC)
- @DanCherek: Thanks for the advisory, it is a bug with a new version of python. I have stopped the bot for now. Maybe @The Earwig: could help advise with "sre_constants.error: unbalanced parenthesis at position 37" or any other TPS. It will be out until I can fix this. -- Amanda (aka DQ) 02:38, 30 June 2021 (UTC)
- Hey Amanda. The error means a regex is bad. I looked and the trout goes to The Anome for this broken regex, now fixed. Bot should work now. Consider adding a try/except around each regex rule so broken ones don't take down the bot. — The Earwig (talk) 04:40, 30 June 2021 (UTC)
- Ouch. Consider me trouted. I will check more carefully next time -- I'm just surprised this hasn't happened before. As The Earwig says, exception handling around the regex parsing would definitely help, but that doesn't excuse the need for user diligence on my part. Many apologies. -- The Anome (talk) 08:05, 30 June 2021 (UTC)

- Consensus has been reached to delete all books in the book namespace. There was rough consensus that the deleted books should still be available on request at WP:REFUND even after the namespace is removed.
- An RfC is open to discuss the next steps following a trial which automatically applied pending changes to TFAs.
- IP addresses of unregistered users are to be hidden from everyone. There is a rough draft of how IP addresses may be shown to users who need to see them. This currently details allowing administrators, checkusers, stewards and those with a new usergroup to view the full IP address of unregistered users. Editors with at least 500 edits and an account over a year old will be able to see all but the end of the IP address in the proposal. The ability to see the IP addresses hidden behind the mask would be dependent on agreeing to not share the parts of the IP address they can see with those who do not have access to the same information. Accessing part of or the full IP address of a masked editor would also be logged. Comments on the draft are being welcomed at the talk page.
- The community authorised COVID-19 general sanctions have been superseded by the COVID-19 discretionary sanctions following a motion at a case request. Alerts given and sanctions placed under the community authorised general sanctions are now considered alerts for and sanctions under the new discretionary sanctions.

UTRS for ptwiki
Hi AmandaNP, we are discussing the UTRS system again at ptwiki. We would really like to deploy it over there as soon as possible. Could you point me to the files or messages that need translating? I searched through the github repository and issues, but it wasn't really clear how to do it. Really appreciate your help. GoEThe (talk) 15:29, 21 July 2021 (UTC)
- Thanks for the poke and the reminder about this. I've been inactive in development for a bit, especially since my new job. We were in the middle of starting to get it translation ready, but I don't think we are there yet. @Majavah: for updates/notifying of this thread. -- Amanda (aka DQ) 18:09, 29 July 2021 (UTC)
- @GoEThe I think everything else is ready except translations, yes. Most parts of the interface that is visible to blocked users has translation strings built into it already (while most areas visible to admins do not). It still needs to be wired up to Translatewiki or similar, but that in itself is kind of complicated as it is using Laravel's own translation library, and I don't think twn supports it's format directly. It's definitely doable, but needs some engineering time to be spent and I haven't found the time/motivation to work on UTRS in the last few months. Majavah (talk!) 16:04, 3 August 2021 (UTC)
Some files with orphaned versions being ignored by DeltaQuadBot
For example File:Braking for Whales.jpg was tagged as having orphaned versions on June 4 and DeltaQuadBot has neither revdelled the orphaned versions nor added |human=yes
to tell a human to do it. * Pppery * it has begun... 23:17, 24 July 2021 (UTC)
- I didn't write the original code, so i'm banging my head off a wall trying to figure out what's changed. I'm thinking something with the API because i'm getting weird output but it doesn't error at all. Obviously something is wrong, problem is i'm not sure what. -- Amanda (aka DQ) 18:46, 29 July 2021 (UTC)
- @Pppery and AmandaNP: Is this the reason why Category:Non-free files with orphaned versions more than 7 days old has 800+ files in it?
- That would be correct. I'll try and take another look tomorrow, but I don't know half of what i'm looking at, so a BOTREQ may be in order for someone to take this over or recode it. -- Amanda (aka DQ) 01:52, 1 August 2021 (UTC)
- To be clear, the bot is still working, just failing on certain ones. -- Amanda (aka DQ) 01:53, 1 August 2021 (UTC)
- @Pppery and AmandaNP: Is this the reason why Category:Non-free files with orphaned versions more than 7 days old has 800+ files in it?
Have you gotten around to do it? Category:Non-free files with orphaned versions more than 7 days old currently has 968 files.Jonteemil (talk) 18:23, 7 August 2021 (UTC)
- I think I have found the issue. It seems it's trying to ignore bot versions with this line of code but in the process is ignoring files that have been previously revdel'd too, making the bot think there is nothing to do when there is. I'm not 100% on it, so I'll test the implications tomorrow morning/afternoon and if it works ok, I'll set it up for the bot to use full time. -- Amanda (aka DQ) 02:26, 8 August 2021 (UTC)
- Awesome! Unfortunately I won't be able to assist you in the code analysis since I can't code myself🙃.Jonteemil (talk) 13:56, 8 August 2021 (UTC)
- So it wasn't that, but I think something changed in the API not to include something anymore, so the bot was erroring quietly and continuing on with it's task as it's supposed to. That's why there were issues. It'll likely take a bit of time to catch up but it is working on the files now -- Amanda (aka DQ) 16:36, 8 August 2021 (UTC)
- It seems to be working as it should now. Category:Non-free files with orphaned versions more than 7 days old currently has 0 files in it. Great job.Jonteemil (talk) 17:12, 9 August 2021 (UTC)

- An RfC is open to add a delay of one week from nomination to deletion for G13 speedy deletions.
- Last week all wikis were very slow or not accessible for 30 minutes. This was due to server lag caused by regenerating dynamic lists on the Russian Wikinews after a large bulk import. (T287380)

- You can vote for candidates in the 2021 Board of Trustees elections from 4 August to 17 August. Four community elected seats are up for election.
Requesting manual review - Free file conflict
- JJMC89 bot "Request revision deletion of orphaned revision(s) per WP:NFCC#7"
- DatBot "Tagging with {{Orphaned non-free revisions}}, see instructions"
- DeltaQuadBot "(Image Revdel) Requesting manual review - Free file conflict"
AmandaNP, @DatGuy and JJMC89: what's happening here? — Alexis Jazz (talk or ping me) 15:39, 3 August 2021 (UTC)
- @Alexis Jazz: DeltaQuadBot refuses to revdel any files in categories listed at User:RonBot/1/FreeCategory (requesting human review on the file instead). That list includes Category:Wikipedia files for discussion, meaning that files that are currently at FFD won't get processed by DeltaQuadBot. The other bots are doing what they are supposed to be doing. The edit summary "free file conflict" is indeed inaccurate, but it's a corner case that is probably not worth fixing. * Pppery * it has begun... 18:59, 3 August 2021 (UTC)

DeltaQuadBot filtering Korean names
Mostly harmless, but I did notice that DQB makes reports to UAA such as this one, which reported a perfectly normal name with an imo dubious rationale. (Is "ghee" really used as a disruptive username? I have my doubts.) It also suggests that the bot would report usernames that include a delicious and culturally important food. Not sure if or what should be done about this, but I thought I would make a note of it. --Equivamp - talk 01:50, 30 August 2021 (UTC)

- A discussion is open to decide when, if ever, should discord logs be eligible for removal when posted onwiki (including whether to oversight them)
- A RfC on the next steps after the trial of pending changes on TFAs has resulted in a 30 day trial of automatic semi protection for TFAs.
- The Score extension has been re-enabled on public wikis. It has been updated, but has been placed in safe mode to address unresolved security issues. Further information on the security issues can be found on the mediawiki page.
- A request for comment is in progress to provide an opportunity to amend the structure, rules, and procedures of the Arbitration Committee election and resolve any issues not covered by existing rules. Comments and new proposals are welcome.
- The 2021 RfA review is now open for comments.

- 45 new Wikipedias now have access to the Growth features. [32]
- A majority of Wikipedias now have access to the Growth features. The Growth team has published an FAQ page about the features. This translatable FAQ covers the description of the features, how to use them, how to change the configuration, and more.
Problems
- All wikis will be read-only for a few minutes on 14 September. This is planned at 14:00 UTC. [33]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 14 September. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 15 September. It will be on all wikis from 16 September (calendar).
- Starting this week, Wikipedia in Italian will receive weekly software updates on Wednesdays. It used to receive the updates on Thursdays. Due to this change, bugs will be noticed and fixed sooner. [34]
- You can add language links in the sidebar in the new Vector skin again. You do this by connecting the page to a Wikidata item. The new Vector skin has moved the language links but the new language selector cannot add language links yet. [35]
- The syntax highlight tool marks up code with different colours. It now can highlight 23 new code languages. Additionally,
golang
can now be used as an alias for the Go programming language, and a specialoutput
mode has been added to show a program's output. [36][37]

Username Issue
Greetings Respected Wikipedian, I am (anonymous) I created my account 7 months ago just to upload a picture but recently I am thinking to edit Wikipedia as a hobby so created a new account User:EƎ (i know its a cool username) but after looking in my saved password log I founded my old account so I logged back into this account. Recent changes
- Growth features are now deployed to almost all Wikipedias. For the majority of small Wikipedias, the features are only available for experienced users, to test the features and configure them. Features will be available for newcomers starting on 20 September 2021.
- MediaWiki had a feature that would highlight local links to short articles in a different style. Each user could pick the size at which "stubs" would be highlighted. This feature was very bad for performance, and following a consultation, has been removed. [38]
- A technical change was made to the MonoBook skin to allow for easier maintenance and upkeep. This has resulted in some minor changes to HTML that make MonoBook's HTML consistent with other skins. Efforts have been made to minimize the impact on editors, but please ping Jon (WMF) on wiki or in phabricator if any problems are reported.
Problems
- There was a problem with search last week. Many search requests did not work for 2 hours because of an accidental restart of the search servers. [39]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 21 September. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 22 September. It will be on all wikis from 23 September (calendar).
- The meta=proofreadpage API has changed. The
piprop
parameter has been renamed toprpiprop
. API users should update their code to avoid unrecognized parameter warnings. Pywikibot users should upgrade to 6.6.0. [40]
Future changes
- The Reply tool will be deployed to the remaining wikis in the coming weeks. It is currently part of "Discussion tools" in Beta features at most wikis. You will be able to turn it off in Editing Preferences. [41]
- The previously announced change to how you obtain tokens from the API has been delayed to September 21 because of an incompatibility with Pywikibot. Bot operators using Pywikibot can follow T291202 for progress on a fix, and should plan to upgrade to 6.6.1 when it is released.

Recent changes
- iOS 15 has a new function called Private Relay (Apple website). This can hide the user's IP when they use Safari browser. This is like using a VPN in that we see another IP address instead. It is opt-in and only for those who pay extra for iCloud. It will come to Safari users on OSX later. There is a technical discussion about what this means for the Wikimedia wikis.
Problems
- Some gadgets and user-scripts add items to the portlets (article tools) part of the skin. A recent change to the HTML may have made those links a different font-size. This can be fixed by adding the CSS class
.vector-menu-dropdown-noicon
. [42]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 28 September. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 29 September. It will be on all wikis from 30 September (calendar).
- The GettingStarted extension was built in 2013, and provides an onboarding process for new account holders in a few versions of Wikipedia. However, the recently developed Growth features provide a better onboarding experience. Since the vast majority of Wikipedias now have access to the Growth features, GettingStarted will be deactivated starting on 4 October. [43]
- A small number of users will not be able to connect to the Wikimedia wikis after 30 September. This is because an old root certificate will no longer work. They will also have problems with many other websites. Users who have updated their software in the last five years are unlikely to have problems. Users in Europe, Africa and Asia are less likely to have immediate problems even if their software is too old. You can read more.
- You can receive notifications when someone leaves a comment on user talk page or mentions you in a talk page comment. Clicking the notification link will now bring you to the comment and highlight it. Previously, doing so brought you to the top of the section that contained the comment. You can find more information in T282029.

Administrators' newsletter – October 2021
News and updates for administrators from the past month (September 2021).
- Following an RfC, extended confirmed protection may be used preemptively on certain high-risk templates.
- Following a discussion at the Village Pump, there is consensus to treat discord logs the same as IRC logs. This means that discord logs will be oversighted if posted onwiki.
- DiscussionTools has superseded Enterprisey's reply-link script. Editors may switch using the "Discussion tools" checkbox under Preferences → Beta features.
- A motion has standardised the 500/30 (extended confirmed) restrictions placed by the Arbitration Committee. The standardised restriction is now listed in the Arbitration Committee's procedures.
- Following the closure of the Iranian politics case, standard discretionary sanctions are authorized for all edits about, and all pages related to, post-1978 Iranian politics, broadly construed.
- The Arbitration Committee encourages uninvolved administrators to use the discretionary sanctions procedure in topic areas where it is authorised to facilitate consensus in RfCs. This includes, but is not limited to, enforcing sectioned comments, word/diff limits and moratoriums on a particular topic from being brought in an RfC for up to a year.
- Editors have approved expanding the trial of Growth Features from 2% of new accounts to 25%, and the share of newcomers getting mentorship from 2% to 5%. Experienced editors are invited to add themselves to the mentor list.
- The community consultation phase of the 2021 CheckUser and Oversight appointments process is open for editors to provide comments and ask questions to candidates.

DeltaQuadBot
Hello, Amanda. I wanted to know why the bot stopped hiding old versions of my files? Quite a lot of them have accumulated. Looking at the logs, bot has become less likely to hide old versions. — Vladlen Manilov ✉ / 09:00, 5 October 2021 (UTC)
- Something definitely doesn't seem right. I'll see if I can look at the code today. -- Amanda (aka DQ) 15:30, 5 October 2021 (UTC)
- @Владлен Манилов: So the sheer numbers in the log do look different, but I don't see anything that my bot is doing wrong per say. Is there a specific file that was tagged and it did not revdel it as it was supposed to? Without a specific error it is hard to look into. The only other thing I can think of looking at File:Garrison Kane.jpg is that DatBot is broken and not reducing the images, therefore there is no work for my bot to do to begin with. If you could clarify the issue, that would be great. Thanks. -- Amanda (aka DQ) 19:34, 5 October 2021 (UTC)

Undelete some important articles
Hi @AmandaNP, I am asking you to undelete some pages in Malayalam movies that you had deleted by closing an afd. These articles are listed below. These articles follow WP:NFILM and WP:NFO. These articles are mentioned in the biographies of some famous personalities like Prem Nazir, Sathyan, Thikkurissi Sukumaran Nair, etc. If these articles lack references, I will add with it and make notable. These articles are a part of history. I will add all available data with references in this articles, if you undelete. The articles to undelete are following -
- Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Poothali - Poothali · ( talk | logs | links | watch | afd ) · [revisions]
- Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Neeli Saali - Neeli Saali · ( talk | logs | links | watch | afd ) · [revisions]
- Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Sthreehridayam - Sthreehridayam · ( talk | logs | links | watch | afd ) · [revisions]
- Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Jnaanasundari - Jnaanasundari · ( talk | logs | links | watch | afd ) · [revisions]
- Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Sabarimala Ayyappan - Sabarimala Ayyappan · ( talk | logs | links | watch | afd ) · [revisions]
- Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Ummini Thanka - Ummini Thanka · ( talk | logs | links | watch | afd ) · [revisions]
So please undelete these articles →MISSION 33 (talk) 17:57, 11 October 2021 (UTC)
- With respect, given your very limited 24 edits to the mainspace, your struggle with existing policies as shown by your talkpage, and the fact that others have asked and attempted this before make me lean towards not restoring these, especially en masse. The fact that you also seem to think you can "make" articles notable seems to me that you don't really understand the notability policy. It's not meant for link stuffing to make it notable. Not everyone is guaranteed an article based on the number of links or who they are related with. So my offer to you is I can restore one article at a time to your userspace, and then you can work on it and bring it back to me when you are done to see if it passes the issues that were brought up in the AfD before it goes back to the mainspace. -- Amanda (aka DQ) 04:06, 12 October 2021 (UTC)

Hi Amanda! I saw your block on User:Wikwikbooks as a CU-confirmed sock of User:Bookswik. Just so you know, Bookswik is GRP, and has already sent me an abusive email, which I can forward if necessary. See Death and state funeral of Joseph Stalin's page history for the full context. You may want to lock both accounts. Thanks! JavaHurricane 10:20, 27 December 2021 (UTC)

- Following consensus at the 2021 RfA review, the autopatrolled user right has been removed from the administrators user group; admins can grant themselves the autopatrolled permission if they wish to remain autopatrolled.
- Additionally, consensus for proposal 6C of the 2021 RfA review has led to the creation of an administrative action review process. The purpose of this process will be to review individual administrator actions and individual actions taken by users holding advanced permissions.
- Following the 2021 Arbitration Committee elections, the following editors have been appointed to the Arbitration Committee: Beeblebrox, Cabayi, Donald Albury, Enterprisey, Izno, Opabinia regalis, Worm That Turned, Wugapodes.
- The functionaries email list (functionaries-enlists.wikimedia.org) will no longer accept incoming emails apart from those sent by list members and WMF staff. Private concerns, apart from those requiring oversight, should be directly sent to the Arbitration Committee.
How we will see unregistered users
Hi!
You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.
When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.
Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.
If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.
We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.
Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

Little help with a interwiki issue
Hi, Amanda. How are you doing? Amanda, we have (what seems to be) a very complex issue at the pt.WP and you might be able to help. We have an active user on pt.WP (Otávio Astor Vaz Costa (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · page moves · block user · block log)) who is blocked here for sock puppetry. They were not blocked by a check user, but rather for a sysop on grounds of WP:DUCK. The editor says they are innocent. About a month ago, an IP posted two messages (here and here) in their TP related to a discussion on Meta. The discussion on Meta was about you. I don't know exactly what about was the discussion, because I'm not updated on the discussion matter. As I'm an active user here and on pt.WP, I'm trying to help. I was thinking if you can, eventually, give it a look and give me an honest opinion about it. Thanks in advance.
PS: Please ping me if you ever answer this message. Kacamata! Dimmi!!! 00:51, 10 February 2022 (UTC)

Hello! I wanted to drop a quick note for all of our AFC participants; nothing huge and fancy like a newsletter, but a few points of interest.
- AFCH will now show live previews of the comment to be left on a decline.
- The template {{db-afc-move}} has been created - this template is similar to {{db-move}} when there is a redirect in the way of an acceptance, but specifically tells the patrolling admin to let you (the draft reviewer) take care of the actual move.
Short and sweet, but there's always more to discuss at WT:AFC. Stop on by, maybe review a draft on the way? Whether you're one of our top reviewers, or haven't reviewed in a while, I want to thank you for helping out in the past and in the future. - Special:Nuke will now provide the standard deletion reasons (editable at MediaWiki:Deletereason-dropdown) to use when mass-deleting pages. This was a request in the 2022 Community Wishlist Survey. [62]
- At Wikipedias, all new accounts now get the Growth features by default when creating an account. Communities are encouraged to update their help resources. Previously, only 80% of new accounts would get the Growth features. A few Wikipedias remain unaffected by this change. [63]
- You can now prevent specific images that are used in a page from appearing in other locations, such as within PagePreviews or Search results. This is done with the markup
class=notpageimage
. For example,[[File:Example.png|class=notpageimage]]
. [64] - There has been a change to the HTML of Special:Contributions, Special:MergeHistory, and History pages, to support the grouping of changes by date in the mobile skin. While unlikely, this may affect gadgets and user scripts. A list of all the HTML changes is on Phabricator.
Events
- Community Wishlist Survey results have been published. The ranking of prioritized proposals is also available.
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 22 February. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 23 February. It will be on all wikis from 24 February (calendar).
Future changes
- The software to play videos and audio files on pages will change soon on all wikis. The old player will be removed. Some audio players will become wider after this change. The new player has been a beta feature for over four years. [65][66]
- Toolforge's underlying operating system is being updated. If you maintain any tools there, there are two options for migrating your tools into the new system. There are details, deadlines, and instructions on Wikitech. [67]
- Administrators will soon have the option to delete/undelete the associated "talk" page when they are deleting a given page. An API endpoint with this option will also be available. This was a request from the 2021 Wishlist Survey.

File:Centene Stadium logo.png
Hi Amanda. DQbot reduced this file earlier today, but it's almost certainly too simple to be eligible for copyright protection per c:COM:TOO United States and was most likely uploaded as non-free because the uploader was just trying to be cautious or wasn't aware things like c:COM:TOO. Essentially the same logo can be found on Commons as File:Centene Stadium.jpg, and that's the one currently being used in the article. Whether it's worth converting the local file from non-free to PD might depend on whether someone intends to use it (I guess). It probably doesn't qualify for speedy deletion per either F5 or F8, but it might per F10. Maybe converting the license and then moving it to Commons would be better? -- Marchjuly (talk) 04:34, 23 February 2022 (UTC)
- @Marchjuly: Looks like it has been deleted F5 anyway. I agree it's too simple for copyright. With the existing file, I'm not sure there is much need to restore it, unless you have any specific insight on it's use. -- Amanda (she/her) 01:15, 25 February 2022 (UTC)
Hi, following the recent internal rename of the oversight group (see Wikipedia:Village pump (technical)#oversight group renamed (breaking change)) I've been updating links to the old variants. Your user talk archive 70 contains one such occurrence, User talk:AmandaNP/Archives/2012/June#OS Run, which I can't update as its fully protected. Could you update it please (change Special:ListUsers/oversight to Special:ListUsers/suppress]])? Thanks in advance, -- Asartea Talk | Contribs 14:02, 24 February 2022 (UTC)

UK Parlophone releases
I recently changed the status of File:Stepinsidelove.png, File:It'sforyou.png, and File:Loveoftheloved.png to "PD-ineligible-USonly
", citing one FFD discussion about another Parlophone release. Prior revisions of those images, which your bot hid, should be un-hidden/un-deleted. WP:REFUND would've been an alternative, but seems that admins haven't responded to some of my requests on un-hiding revisions of other files lately. --George Ho (talk) 00:08, 25 February 2022 (UTC)

Recent changes
- When searching for edits by change tags, e.g. in page history or user contributions, there is now a dropdown list of possible tags. This was a request in the 2022 Community Wishlist Survey. [68]
- Mentors using the Growth Mentor dashboard will now see newcomers assigned to them who have made at least one edit, up to 200 edits. Previously, all newcomers assigned to the mentor were visible on the dashboard, even ones without any edit or ones who made hundred of edits. Mentors can still change these values using the filters on their dashboard. Also, the last choice of filters will now be saved. [69][70]
- The user group
oversight
was renamedsuppress
. This is for technical reasons. You may need to update any local references to the old name, e.g. gadgets, links to Special:Listusers, or uses of NUMBERINGROUP.
Problems
- The recent change to the HTML of tracking changes pages caused some problems for screenreaders. This is being fixed. [71]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 1 March. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 2 March. It will be on all wikis from 3 March (calendar).
Future changes
- Working with templates will become easier. Several improvements are planned for March 9 on most wikis and on March 16 on English Wikipedia. The improvements include: Bracket matching, syntax highlighting colors, finding and inserting templates, and related visual editor features.
- If you are a template developer or an interface administrator, and you are intentionally overriding or using the default CSS styles of user feedback boxes (the classes:
successbox, messagebox, errorbox, warningbox
), please note that these classes and associated CSS will soon be removed from MediaWiki core. This is to prevent problems when the same class-names are also used on a wiki. Please let us know by commenting at phab:T300314 if you think you might be affected.

Recent changes
- In the Wikipedia Android app it is now possible to change the toolbar at the bottom so the tools you use more often are easier to click on. The app now also has a focused reading mode. [73][74]
Problems
- There was a problem with the collection of some page-view data from June 2021 to January 2022 on all wikis. This means the statistics are incomplete. To help calculate which projects and regions were most affected, relevant datasets are being retained for 30 extra days. You can read more on Meta-wiki.
- There was a problem with the databases on March 10. All wikis were unreachable for logged-in users for 12 minutes. Logged-out users could read pages but could not edit or access uncached content then. [75]
Changes later this week

Suggestion for User:DeltaQuadBot
Hello Amanda,
I have been seeing accounts containing the numbers 69 and 420, and sometimes, the numbers are mashed together. They have been used to vandalize Wikipedia (examples: [80], [81], [82]). I know that 69 has a sexual meaning and 420 is connected to marijuana use. Due to these numbers' indecent meanings, I think they should be added to your bot account's blacklist. As a result, when these numbers appear alone or mashed up, they should be a red flag for someone who does not intend to positively contribute to Wikipedia. What do you think?
--LPS and MLP Fan (Littlest Pet Shop and My Little Pony Fan) 17:44, 17 March 2022 (UTC)
- I try and keep out of the day to day operation of the blacklist. Please file your request on User talk:AmandaNP/UAA/Blacklist. I think they used to be on there at some point, but I haven't followed the history of the backlist. -- Amanda (she/her) 21:18, 17 March 2022 (UTC)

New code release schedule for this week
- There will be four MediaWiki releases this week, instead of just one. This is an experiment which should lead to fewer problems and to faster feature updates. The releases will be on all wikis, at different times, on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. You can read more about this project.
Recent changes
- You can now set how many search results to show by default in your Preferences. This was the 12th most popular wish in the Community Wishlist Survey 2022. [83]
- The Jupyter notebooks tool PAWS has been updated to a new interface. [84]
Future changes
- Interactive maps via Kartographer will soon work on wikis using the FlaggedRevisions extension. Please tell us which improvements you want to see in Kartographer. You can take this survey in simple English. [85]

Permanently banned? RandomCanadian seems to be editing
Disruptive posts at Albert Einstein talk page
Recently I encountered several, signed as RandomCanadian at Diff; that user was authoritatively (and repeatedly) sending people through policies about defining cathegories etc, as the answer for removing material from the article, and you can see some pages of HAHAHAHA... I didn't go into technical like that HAHA intentions then, but went to the content of RandomCanadian-signed posts, and it's author's userpage contents.
Permanently globally locked sockpuppet user?
As I looked on the referenced user's talk page, I also saw recent postings, but when I looked into his user page and it's history, I found previous contents removed and a template about sockupuppet and global lock inserted in summer 2021 at Diff. That held till jan 2021, when those banners have ben removed, and previous contents rebuilt, by User:Maxim Diff, which by contents of the Diff and user's page seems to be another stockpuppet, and the same goes for User:Dylanport1 on the next Diffs. See also Special:UserRights/Maxim. Next changes were made by user:Random Canadian again; so what happened to his "permanent global" ban?
Supposedly misleading contents of that user page was also restored several times by (well-intended ) experienced users (that belived it is a wikipedia: Good faith user without checking history): DiffDiff.
The rest of the pattern (both contents and users/IP-s) is interesting. If the block is still legaly in place, it seems he was evading it, and was also creating himself a userpage with a look of a wikipedian in good standing; actually, it may be he has given himself "barnstars from" just the people that opose vandalism, for combating vandalism he is probably causing. Pattern is (somewhat) similar with Zalgo. The IMO misleading contents was also progressively enclosed in more and more layers of colapsing frames, so that it may be not instantly visible to a casual viewer.
I also see a RandomCanadian-signed (or RC-signed looking) comment in Zalgo Archive in discussion about Zalgo's stockpuppets.
Sockpuppet or hijacked user?
The person that published the contents like above (under any user name or IP) doesn't lack brainpower, but sadly seem to lack wisdom. His pattern of intentionally disturbing posts that I have seen on several places makes me conclude: anything published by him (it doesn't seem her) is suspect in my eyes (so far, that I have to think for a moment how far it's true if he wrote that sun rose this morning, not only who "gave him" barnstars and for what).
But some of the contributions under this user name seem constructive (as if there were two different persons using same user name Contributions and e.g. Talk:China Eastern Airlines Flight 5735. Also, the style of the signature is consistently different (I suppose it is set in the profile, so I suppose there are consistently two profiles in use); see at the example above and at Diff (difference in style of signature, area of interest and mode of communication). Is it possible that the account was somehow hijacked by the puppet master? If it was, and until the weak spot misused is closed, discussion on how should proceed by some other channel. --Marjan Tomki SI (talk) 10:45, 23 March 2022 (UTC)
- @Marjan Tomki SI: RandomCanadian is not blocked. If I sign as Barack Hussein Obama, do you believe I'm Obama? tgeorgescu (talk) 11:01, 23 March 2022 (UTC)
- If you want to accuse User:Maxim of being a sockpuppet (and worse, one that uses his admin tools to unblock other socks), then you should head to WP:SPI or mail your evidence to ArbCom. However, it would be a lot wiser to retract these claims as it is extremely unlikely to be correct, and without evidence is a severe personal attack. RandomCanadian was a sockpuppet, he appealed to ArbCom, and they accepted his appeal and allowed him to edit as RandomCanadian. Unless there are issues with his editing since then, the older history is quite clear but no longer of concern. Fram (talk) 11:04, 23 March 2022 (UTC)
- I've had no previous interaction with the above user, so I have absolutely no clue what they're talking about. And I was unblocked (mostly because the original block was incorrect) and cleared of any wrongdoing (I'm not going to quote private emails between me and Arbcom - short story, I am not and never was a sock). @Fram: I don't know if the above missed their appointment for April Fools or something. On the other hand, someone making a post like the above immediately triggers my suspicion meter, but I'd have no clue here either as to what might be behind this. RandomCanadian (talk / contribs) 13:38, 23 March 2022 (UTC)
- RandomCanadian, I only went by your block/unblock log, I haven't looked into it into detail. I'm glad to hear that the block was in error, but even if it had been justified, it wouldn't warrant the above out of the blue claims is what I wanted to say. Fram (talk) 15:14, 23 March 2022 (UTC)
- @RandomCanadian, Fram, and Tgeorgescu: Actually, I am glad to be found April fool in this case. My intention was not to accuse, but to make somebody competent and with authority check things.
- A bit on background: My job before retirement - for several decades - had included preventing effects of malware. That conditioned me to automaticaly jump to conclusions and immedially act preventively to minimize damage, but not assign responsibility unless/until proven. And speed was almost always critical. And I was good at that (which included some selective paranoia, and a lot of luck).
- In this case I immediately tried to bring the possible problem to attention of a competent person, who dealed with the problem before, in this case on Amanda's talk page.
- What I saw: a situation, where the user who was blocked indefinitely and globaly, and had been found used as sockpuppet, was active again.
- To let know people who ridicule all conspiracy theroists, that not every story like this is a hoax: I was also aware (but not involved in solving) of a similar problem in Croatia that took a lot of time and effort - it seems to have taken about ten years to solve - see RfC from March 2010 and Wikimedia bans admin of Wikipedia Croatia for pushing radical right agendas
This group had de-facto control of the website between 2011 and 2020, the Wikimedia Foundation said in a report published earlier this month.
- Because of that background I needed somebody competent to investigate it. I also thought that person needed to see what gave me the idea that there is a possible problem, and what would mean if sockpuppet really could revert the lock without been detected (so the Diffs above, and hasty text).
- Where I was right: I knew I was not competent here to do it here properly.
- Where I was wrong
- I missed, where to look to see the block/lock logs; because of that I didn's see RandomCanadian's block was released by decision of ArbCom, as reminded by Fram.
- Consequently:
- RandomCanadian is not a sockpuppet
- RandomCanadian didn't evade the ban: lock was in place for about half a year, but was released by ArbCom authorisation
- Maxim didn't restore the lock, as I thought; he just returned userpage to previous state after RandomCanadian's successfull appeal to ArbCom
- Lock was administered - locking and unlocking - separately (also for en:WP and global)
- What I see as my main blunders
- Being sloppy checking data, including finding who administered locks (at en:WP and at Meta, locking and unlocking), and at who actually did the vandalism at Einstein talk page in the time frame I looked in (I now found IP-s used in the time interval I observed belonged to LA area school IP provider), that RandomCanadian only took barnstars from his talk page and put them to user page (they were not visible at a glance on talk page because RandomCanadian reverted them) and I didn't look well enough and missed that - and more of negligence and hastiness like that).
- Letting my old automatic professional paranoia overcome WP:AGF - that's something that now I see I'll have to be permanently and consciously vigilant about.
- I Might easily have caused pain and damage to RandomCanadian (and possibly several others I mentioned). I'm lucky RandomCanadian has taken me as a fool instead.
- I still don't like removing well sourced data from articles just because most of geneal public is not interested in them (not notable to them), because they supposedly clutter the articles, or removal of such without citation needed template first, but that's for discussion for other times and places, but how I came from that to hypothesing RandomCanadian a confirmed stockpuppet evading lock is my blunder par excellence, and that I think needed to be made clear here.
- I just hope Amanda doesn't clear this whole section from her talk page by reverting relevant set of changes, like RandomCanadian did in his talk page which made me miss things I shouldn't miss... Somebody could learn from my mistakes (besides me). And this concludes my before April first April fool story.--Marjan Tomki SI (talk) 01:46, 25 March 2022 (UTC)
- What I see as my main blunders

Hello, AmandaNP,
One of my daily tasks is rescaling files that DeltaQuadBot tags and places in Category:Non-free files with orphaned versions more than 7 days old needing human review which it usually does daily at 02:00 UTC. But it hasn't done this since April 8th so I thought I'd inquire if there was a problem with the bot, maybe it needs a tweak or something. It's behavior is very regular and predictable so it's unusual that there haven't been any files tagged in two days.
Any way, I hope you are well and had a pleasant weekend. Thanks for any help you can provide! Liz Read! Talk! 02:58, 11 April 2022 (UTC)

The administrator policy has been updated with new activity requirements following a successful Request for Comment.
Beginning January 1, 2023, administrators who meet one or both of the following criteria may be desysopped for inactivity if they have:
- Made neither edits nor administrative actions for at least a 12-month period OR
- Made fewer than 100 edits over a 60-month period
Administrators at risk for being desysopped under these criteria will continue to be notified ahead of time. Thank you for your continued work.

- @Beeblebrox: Honestly, can't tell you what happened. I just manually ran the bot and it seems to be working. I'll watch this run and check on it again in the morning to see if anything else comes up. Thanks for letting me know though. -- Amanda (she/her) 03:09, 16 April 2022 (UTC)
- Even if you did tell me what happened I probably would't know what it meant. Bots are a hazy mystery to me. Seems fine now though. Beeblebrox (talk) 17:16, 16 April 2022 (UTC)
- Something very weird is going there, that could be related to why the bot is not removing blocked users. See my comments at Wikipedia talk:Username policy#weird bug. Beeblebrox (talk) 18:38, 18 April 2022 (UTC)
- @Beeblebrox: The issue with not removing blocked was a scripting issue, I never updated the regular task command. It works now. That said, I'm seeing everything perfectly with marked blocked, so i'm not sure the issue there. -- Amanda (she/her) 19:10, 18 April 2022 (UTC)

Updates to bureaucrat minimum activity requirements
Hello AmandaNP.
Following a discussion at the Bureaucrats' noticeboard, the minimum activity requirements for bureaucrats have been updated to also include the the recently updated minimum editing requirements for administrators (i.e. at least 100 edits every 5 years). This will be enforced beginning in January 2023. Should you no longer wish to volunteer as a bureaucrat you may request removal at SRP and.or let us know at WP:BN.

I'm not sure what is going on with the above image which I uploaded several years ago. Can you elucidate? BeenAroundAWhile (talk) 02:27, 24 April 2022 (UTC)
- If I understand you correctly, and by your timestamp, you are wondering what was going to be deleted. It was only the old revisions of the file because the file is not free. The bot couldn't do it on it's own so it flagged it for human review, which got done by Liz just over an hour later. -- Amanda (she/her) 12:57, 24 April 2022 (UTC)

Block evasion: Ham2703 logged-out editing
Hi AmandaNP, Ham2703 is evading their block as IP 190.219.168.53. (I bring this to you as you are the most recent CU to check this case and the proper venue for reporting IP socking on en.wiki is unclear to me--various admin forums are apt to say a CU is needed and SPI is apt to say CUs cannot connect IPs to users.) As I a) am not an en.wiki CU and b) have not run a CU, the below is entirely public information:
- 04:21, 11 May 2022 - Kensoup (confirmed sock) uploads File:Leila Bennett in Fury (1936) trailer.jpg
- 04:21, 11 May 2022 - Kensoup uploads File:Bruce Cabot in Fury (1936) trailer.jpg
- 04:22, 11 May 2022 - Kensoup uploads File:Frank Albertson in Fury (1936) trailer.jpg
- 04:23, 11 May 2022 - Kensoup uploads File:Edward Ellis in Fury (1936) trailer.jpg
- 04:30, 11 May 2022 - IP 190.219.168.53 adds File:Leila Bennett in Fury (1936) trailer.jpg to Leila Bennett
- 04:39, 11 May 2022 - IP 190.219.168.53 adds File:Bruce Cabot in Fury (1936) trailer.jpg to Bruce Cabot
- 04:42, 11 May 2022 - IP 190.219.168.53 adds File:Frank Albertson in Fury (1936) trailer.jpg to Frank Albertson
- 04:51, 11 May 2022 - IP 190.219.168.53 adds File:Edward Ellis in Fury (1936) trailer.jpg to Edward Ellis (actor)
Troublesome also is that Ham2703 appears to be using Lord Cornwallis to assist their evasion (e.g., confirmed sock Latyelcop uploads File:Lisa Golm in The Hoodlum (1951).jpg, IP 190.140.147.233 asks Lord Cornwallis to create Lisa Golm, which is done; confirmed sock Kensoup uploads File:George Walcott in Fury (1936) trailer.jpg, IP 190.219.168.53 asks Lord Cornwallis to create George Walcott.) If necessary, I can dig out a WMF Office quote that assistance of a evasion is sanctionable. Could you look into addressing this, including range block(s) if appropriate? Also pinging @Ponyo: and @RoySmith: as admins/CUs who've worked on this case/may be familiar with this user. Эlcobbola talk 16:04, 11 May 2022 (UTC)

Requesting unblock so that I can edit from my phone

- I forgot to mention that the phone is Google Fi, which operates like Android, but is neither Android nor iPhone. Not sure if that's relevant, but it's a global phone (works exactly the same in any country) and so I somewhat imagine abuse could have come from these phones. https://fi.google.com/about/ Fortunaa (talk) 01:11, 30 May 2022 (UTC)

Recent changes
- In the Vector 2022 skin, the page title is now displayed above the tabs such as Discussion, Read, Edit, View history, or More. Learn more. [133]
- It is now possible to easily view most of the configuration settings that apply to just one wiki, and to compare settings between two wikis if those settings are different. For example: Japanese Wiktionary settings, or settings that are different between the Spanish and Esperanto Wikipedias. Local communities may want to discuss and propose changes to their local settings. Details about each of the named settings can be found by searching MediaWiki.org. [134]
- The Anti-Harassment Tools team recently deployed the IP Info Feature as a Beta Feature at all wikis. This feature allows abuse fighters to access information about IP addresses. Please check our update on how to find and use the tool. Please share your feedback using a link you will be given within the tool itself.
Changes later this week
- There is no new MediaWiki version this week.
- Some wikis will be in read-only for a few minutes because of a switch of their main database. It will be performed on 12 July at 07:00 UTC (targeted wikis).
Future changes
- The Beta Feature for DiscussionTools will be updated throughout July. Discussions will look different. You can see some of the proposed changes.

socky socky
Hi Amanda--I can use your help. I just dropped a dozen (or tw?) CU blocks on an LTA who is obsessed with categories (particularly for LGBT matter) and taxonomy. I've blocked them before, and you have blocked them globally. I wonder if we shouldn't have an SPI, and what this sock's history is. You can see the blocks in my history--they are related to User:TARMMPAN4R7D, one I blocked a while ago and whom I reference in the log, but I'm sure they go back farther. Also, I suppose it would be good if there were global blocks on all of them, right? I'd get started on the SPI paperwork and all that, but perhaps you know more than I, and if you do that would save me some work. Also, I gotta run! Thanks so much, Drmies (talk) 17:49, 13 July 2022 (UTC)
