- Mary McAleese is re-appointed as President of Ireland, unopposed, for a second seven-year term. She will be re-inaugurated on November 11.
- Seattle Mariner outfielder Ichiro Suzuki breaks the 84-year-old Major League Baseball record for hits in a season, prompting celebrations in Seattle and Japan.
- Mount St. Helens awakens, with a minor eruption of steam, smoke and ash. Scientists do not believe a major volcanic eruption is likely at this point.
