The International School of Temple Arts (ISTA) "is part of a global transformational movement where human consciousness is being opened to its source as love and harmoniously integrating with other sentient kingdoms and dimensions”; and its missions is "to expand consciousness and sexuality across the globe. We are a movement that brings a knowledge base to everyone, especially practitioners and guides to enhance their skillsets in all aspects of life mastery", this according to its Return of Organization Exempt From Income Tax.^[1]

Neotantra and western interpretations of shamanism influence ISTA teachings.^[2]^[3]^[4]

Journalist Anke Richter stated to the Byron Shire Echo that "There was a covert harem culture at ISTA. Male pioneers surrounded themselves with young female lovers, often from their trainings, who were then accelerated to apprentices and facilitators".^[5] Some senior members of the organisation have been accused of performing sex acts on meeting participants without consent or pressuring them to consent to sex acts.^[5]^[6]^[7] One woman said that she had been raped by a teacher after he drugged her with MDMA.^[5] In 2021 the organisation said that they had implemented a policy of not allowing Temple Training teachers to have sex with participants.^[6]

Initially, ISTA had a central office and manager, but trainings are now worldwide, although ISTA has 501(c)(3) status within the United States. There is no longer an operational location, instead, a "Governance Circle" of trainers oversees the organization.^[8]^[9] The Governance Circle consists of five ISTA faculty members who make decisions about the allocation of financial resources, and whatever governance issues may arise.^[10] After having served a few years on the Governance Circle, the ISTA faculty members generally retire to join the "Wisdom Circle", making themselves available for consultation when needed.^[10] Nichols is no longer involved in the trainings, and stepped-down from his participation in the Governance Circle in 2019.^[9]

Sexual practices can occur in connection with ISTA events, but sexual education about safe sex practices is a core component of ISTA trainings. According to ISTA's publications "Safe Sex" not only means safe from sexually transmitted infection, but safe from emotional abuse, safe from relationship endangerment, safe from misunderstood intentions, and a feeling of safety that boundaries will be respected.^{[citation needed]}

Although ISTA began in Arizona, it has expanded, such that many thousands of individuals have taken the ISTA trainings all over the world.^[11] In Israel, a large community of ISTA graduates have developed and created other programs that are carrying the ISTA teachings to a larger audience.^[12] Such organizations include 'Alma' and 'Ishtar'.

Nudity, teacher-student sexual relationships and other practices that occur at ISTA have caused controversy around ISTA trainings at some locations.^[13]

Training levels

ISTA holds four main programs:^[14]^[13]^[8]

Level 1 (SSSEx, Spriritual Sexual Shamanic Experience) is a week-long experience for the integration of spirituality and sexuality. The curriculum may include ceremonial group striping, "self-love" ceremony of public masturbation, "sacred spot" ceremony of anal massage in randomly assigned pairs, "Yoni and Lingam messages" of vaginal or penis manual stimulation in randomly assigned pairs and "yoni gazing" in which female volunteers expose their genitalia to the rest of the group.^[15] The course may also include the learning of "seven tools" for "emotional release" that include practices of fiercely shaking one's body, screaming into pillows, imitating a child's tantrum, pillow humping, pillow beating and more.^[16]
Level 2 (SSSIn, Spriritual Sexual Shamanic Initiation) is a deeper initiation journey, working more with shadow aspects and the transpersonal self.
Level 3 (SSSeed, Spriritual Sexual Shamanic Seeding) is designed to train people who want to work in the field of sexual shamanism either within ISTA or autonomously.
The Practitioner Training is a structured program for developing practitioners to offer this work one on one.

Training financials

The organizer of a training is responsible for arranging food, housing, training center, and whatever else the training requires logistically. Prices for trainings can vary by location, with discounts for early registration, repeaters, youth, local nationals, and assistants. The organizer bears financial responsibility for the training. If the costs of the training exceed the revenues, the organizer must cover all the losses. If revenues exceed costs for level 1 or level 2, the excess funds are distributed as follows:^[17]

20% to organizer
20% to the ISTA organization
15% to each co-facilitator
28% to the lead facilitator
2% to the World Empowerment Trust^[18]

Physical temple

ISTA creates temporary temples in its workshops, that happen in different venues. It is also associated with a permanent physical temple located in New Zealand near Palmerston North. Formerly Highden [d] Manor Estate,^[19] ISTA Wisdom Council member Bruce Lyon converted the hotel into Highden Temple.^[20]
