NEW NOMINATIONS

Category:Turkish people by location and occupation

Nominator's rationale: dual upmerge for now: only one category that doesn't help with navigation. Mason (talk) 19:29, 16 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Turkish philosophers by century

Nominator's rationale: upmerge for now: only one category that doesn't help with navigation. Mason (talk) 19:28, 16 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Fictional Qatari people

Nominator's rationale: Not useful for navigation. The sole content is redirect Orry (mascot), mascot of the 2006 Asian Games. Note that the mascot represents an Arabian oryx, which are not even specific to Qatar but to the Arabian peninsula. Place Clichy (talk) 14:32, 16 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Journalists killed while covering the 2023 Israel–Hamas war

Nominator's rationale: All 4 Israeli journalists killed were not reporting while this happened, and similarly with Palestinian journalists it is not known in each circumstance whether they were covering the war or not. My proposed renaming is neutral and keeps with spirit of this category ~ 🦝 Shushugah (he/him • talk) 12:55, 16 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Comment For transparency I created the category. The "while covering the *conflict name*" was used for consistency in the parent category Category:Journalists killed while covering military conflicts. If we're renaming, it may be worth doing the other categories as well. TulsaPoliticsFan (talk) 16:47, 16 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Physics in fiction

Nominator's rationale: Per WP:NONDEF. Would also allow the subcategories to be renamed. ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ () 12:26, 16 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Question: Can you please explain why WP:NONDEF applies here? To me, none of the Definingness test bullets seem to apply to this category. Sorry if I'm missing the obvious; I'm not a regular on CFD. ◅ Sebastian Helm 🗨 12:54, 16 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
There is general consensus that "so and so in fiction" allows anything to be included as long as it has a trivial mention of that thing. Thus, they have built up tons of unrelated articles.
There's a broad overall trend of any "in fiction" categories being moved, because "about X" is much more clear on what they should contain. ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ () 12:57, 16 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. Reducing trivia cruft is a goal I support. One might question whether this naming pattern is really the best possible fix; I prefer the main topic to come first, and only later the “in fiction”. But this is not the place to discuss this, and I trust you that there's general consensus to name such cats "Fiction about ...". If that is so, please add that to WP:NONDEF, ideally with the rationale you just gave, so others understand what you mean when you refer to it. You might also want to mention the analogy to Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Trivia sections. ◅ Sebastian Helm 🗨 14:21, 16 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Fictional people by ethnicity

Nominator's rationale: rename because
  1. Most subcategories belong in the ethnicity tree rather than in the descent tree (e.g. Category:Fictional Italian Jews).
  2. Some categories belong neither in an ethnicity tree nor in a descent tree (e.g. Category:Fictional people from Galicia (Spain) is by province).
  3. The remains by ethnicity are too small to diffuse by the above nationalities, hence merge.
Marcocapelle (talk) 12:15, 16 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Merge Per WP:NARROWCAT. As the guideline says, "if an article is in category "A" and in category "B" - a category A and B does not necessarily need to be created for this article". This is clear category clutter. ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ () 13:00, 16 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Merge per nom. This is an improvement overall in this messy category structure (of course I still think the target should be renamed to Category:Fictional characters by ethnicity ). Place Clichy (talk) 15:29, 16 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Communications in fiction

Nominator's rationale: Merge per WP:OVERLAPCAT as largely an unnecessary distinction. These are works of fiction about tech and its effects. ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ () 09:24, 16 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Social reputation in fiction

Nominator's rationale: This category largely appears to refer to social media as a modern or sci-fi concept rather than people's reputations in general. I suggest merging per WP:OVERLAPCAT. ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ () 09:16, 16 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Violence in video games

Nominator's rationale: What exactly this category refers to is unclear. It appears to contain video games people arbitrarily think are violent, and a few controversies about video game violence. I think it is unnecessary and WP:SUBJECTIVECAT, as Category:Video game controversies works well enough. ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ () 09:09, 16 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Assyrian Egyptian

Nominator's rationale: delete, the articles are about religion, not about diaspora, for background see Chaldean Catholic Church. Marcocapelle (talk) 07:11, 16 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Indo-European archaeology

Nominator's rationale: split, trivial intersection with language family. Per precedent, e.g. Wikipedia:Categories_for_discussion/Log/2023_August_27#Category:Indo-European_gods. Marcocapelle (talk) 06:28, 16 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Split per nom. The link between language families and archaeology has been much challenged. Place Clichy (talk) 15:23, 16 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Split per nom. Geography is definitely easier to understand for users searching for an article, and far less likely to be controversial, fuzzy, or frequently needing to be changed whenever someone publishes a new hypothesis.--Andrew Lancaster (talk) 16:25, 16 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Category:People educated at Licensed Victuallers' School

Nominator's rationale: LVS Ascot is the current name of the school which was formerly known as formerly known as Licensed Victuallers' School.
