Summary

Description
English: Waiheke pā site Te Pūtiki o Kahumatamomoe, aka Te Pūtiki o Kahu, was the scene of many historic events on Waiheke Island. Waiheke was first settled after the ocean-going waka (canoe) Te Arawa, arrived in the Hauraki Gulf. The site was named Te Pūtiki o Kahumatamomoe ‘the top knot of Kahumatamomoe’ after the son of Te Arawa chief Tamatekapua. In 1821 the fortress, then occupied by Ngāti Pāoa, was sacked by Ngāpuhi war leader Hongi Hika.
