The Ford Motor Company began in 1903, with the 2 passenger auto carriage, the Model A Runabout. Ford contracted John and Horace Dodge to manufacture the engine. It was under the front seat and drove the rear wheels with a chain. The Dodges started making their own cars in 1914.
The Model R was based on the Model N, same engine and chassis, but a wider body with running boards and bigger wheels. When the Model R bodies ran out the put its running boards on the Model N and called it a Model S.
